You really need me to explain why it’s disrespectful! Oh dear!ClaretAndJew wrote:Why's it disrespectful? Who cares? It's just a song. It doesn't actually really mean anything.
I was having a **** during it.
Yes.Carport wrote:You really need me to explain why it’s disrespectful! Oh dear!
Not more disrespectful no but still disrespectful to the country in which he has been allowed to ply his trade for many years. It matters not that he’s not British. Maybe I’m in a minority on this. Would be interesting to see what others think. Maybe I’m old school.ClaretAndJew wrote:Yes.
What is disrespectful about chewing gum during a national anthem of a country he isn't from? Is it any more disrespectful than the England squad standing there gormless pretending to mouth the words half arsed?
I think there are more trying issues to be concerned about that some Portuguese fella chewing gum during a song.Carport wrote:Not more disrespectful no but still disrespectful to the country in which he has been allowed to ply his trade for many years. I don't sing the anthem when it's on, I can only assume you were stood there in your front room belting it out.
Maybe you are in a minority, Carport, but I'm proud to be part of that minority. The very people who complain about this country going to the dogs are the ones who have forgotten what respect is.Carport wrote:Not more disrespectful no but still disrespectful to the country in which he has been allowed to ply his trade for many years. I couldn't care less about Mourinho. He has shown many times what a poor specimen of a human being he is. But I do care when our own show a distinct lack of respect. Old school we may be but standards have been sliding for many years now.
Our national anthem is not great but it is what it is and to show it disrespect is to stick up two fingers at our queen and country.

A lack of respect for anyone, or anything.ClaretAndJew wrote:I'll never understand patriotism. It's where you were shat out, nothing more.
You really believe that what I have said suggests I lack respect? Strange concept but I'd love to hear your reasoning behind it.Billyblah wrote:A lack of respect for anyone, or anything.
And that's why, fellow Clarets, this country has been 'going to the dog's' for some years.
I fully agree with Spades line of thinking.

I must admit, when I watch the Clarets on telly, I stand up and clap when they come out of the tunnel .Greenmile wrote:Do people stand for the national anthem if they are alone in a room?
Or on the Queen’s.Guich wrote:Seems to me the left seem to get offended on behalf of others (who may not be offended themselves) whereas nationalists get offended on their own behalf.

I think I’m with the family G on that one, although I will obviously cheer / curse etc when watching us on tv on my own. Each to their own I suppose.Guich wrote:I must admit, when I watch the Clarets on telly, I stand up and clap when they come out of the tunnel .
Mrs G and the kids think I'm mental
As well maybe.Greenmile wrote:Or on the Queen’s.
The little things matter - our very own manager would agree. What are the beliefs that he tries to instill? Ignoring them and we end up with tits who blabber on about bigger things to worry about, those little things make a difference.ClaretAndJew wrote:I think there are more trying issues to be concerned about that some Portuguese fella chewing gum during a song.
Man chews gum. Ergo, proof of decline of Western civilisation.Declinism is the belief that a society or institution is tending towards decline. Particularly, it is the predisposition, possibly due to cognitive bias, such as rosy retrospection, to view the past more favourably and future negatively.
(...)
Declinism has been found to be rather widespread in the United Kingdom. In a 2015 survey, 70% of Britons agreed with the statement that “things are worse than they used to be,” even though at the time Britons were in fact “richer, healthier and longer-living than ever before.” However, it was also mentioned that many of the things that older people mourn from their youths were no longer existant (sic) in modern society.
British historian Robert Tombs suggested that the United Kingdom has faced several 'bouts' of Declinism, as far back as the 1880s when German competition in manufactured goods was first felt and then again in the 1960s and 1970s, with economic worries, rapid decolonisation and a perception of dwindling power and influence in every field. Tombs however, concluded that "Declinism is at best a distortion of reality" and denied suggestions that Britain was no longer the great power it once was.
In France, declinism has been described as a "booming industry" with poular (sic) authors such as Michel Onfray writing books and articles exploring failings of France and the West. French Declinsim (sic...are you ****ing serious, wikipedia???) has been related to the counter-Enlightenment of the early 19th century, and also to the late 1970s with the end of three decades of post World War 2 economic growth. In modern times, the phenomenon has picked up velocity and cut across the political spectrum with several variations of “déclinisme” emerging, from Catholic reactionaries to nonreligious thinkers questioning national identity and political corruption.
That really contributed to the thread Geoff!Geoff wrote:Maybe you're an idiot?
Some of the left, sure. But i think it's important to understand that nationalists are getting offended by someone chewing gum. When the left get offended on someone elses behalf it's because the left think they're victims of oppression of some kind.Guich wrote:Seems to me the left seem to get offended on behalf of others (who may not be offended themselves) whereas nationalists get offended on their own behalf.
It's not though. This is actually something the snowflake element of the left and the snowflake element of the right can bond over: their pathetic need to be offended by the slightest, most tenuous of things.taio wrote:Funny how it ends up in a political left vs right discussion.
Agree. But I see you couldn't resist attempting to contribute and switch it into a left vs right discussion.Imploding Turtle wrote:It's not though. Neither and the people who argue about who's ''left wing'' are f**king muppets, you have to be seriously weird to turn every argument into a political one by claiming people are ''left wing''. Do people really give a toss about all that guff?Imploding Turtle wrote:Some of the left, sure. But i think it's important to understand that nationalists are getting offended by someone chewing gum. Which would you rather be? Offended by someone chewing gum, or offended that other people are being oppressed even if sometimes you're wrong?
That's racist against white people!Socrates wrote:Like the Daily Mail comments section this.
