Eintracht Frankfurt in Europa League

Our last ever European opponents were Eintracht Frankfurt who qualified for next season's Europa League yesterday by beating Bayern Munich in the German Cup Final. Had they not won it, the place in the Europa League would have gone to Vfb Stuttgart who we played in the same 1966/67 season.

That third goal had some controversy. Bayern should have had a penalty and, despite using VAR, they were only given a corner. From the corner Frankfurt scored that goal.

Lol. Yep

Still. **** Bayern. They walked off the pitch immediately after receiving their medals instead of applauding the winners.

Was there (just got back

) Amazing game and well deserved result. Bayern rolling over last week to allow Stuttgart 7th place immaterial now. With this win Eintracht go straight to group stages so Clarets need to navigate the qualification stages successfully to keep my dream game on track (being an exile in Frankfurt)!

They won on the final day too and thought they might have escaped. Used to be the biggest team in the league but have had more relegation battles than Sunderland in the last few years.

Am I right in thinking that Eintracht Frankfurt don’t play in the same stadium as they did when we played them?
Hamburg & Stuttgart do play in the same stadiums.

yes. It's the World cup stadium from 2006 (England/Paraguay?). But located on the exact same spot as the Waldstadion, so different stadium, same place so to speak. But all locals and traditionalists still refer to it as Waldstadion much like we would if Turf Moor suffered a similar fate.

Thanks for that. I’ve visited the Waldstadion years ago but didn’t know they’d rebuilt at the same place.

I LOVE how all the Eintracht Frankfurt subs and staff were encroaching on the pitch as they scored the breakaway 3rd goal.

Letter of the law should never have been allowed.

Can you imagine if the ref had disallowed it for that? There'd have been a riot.

Was at Eintract last year. Fantastic ground, awesome fans and the best atmosphere I have seen in many a year. Really hope we meet them as I reckon we would beat them.

I can still remember the longside singing...
Aye ai ai ai
Thomson is better than Yashin,
Lochhead is better than Eusebio,
And Frankfurt are in for a thrashing.

Recommend the live feed of the team presenting the trophy to the town if its online anywhere. Obviously a bit unplanned as there is no bus and the team are split amongst a flotilla of cabriolets driving from the airport to town. Still quite cool, and about 20-30k waiting.

Would have been a fair walk, good 4 or so miles. It is in the forest but multiple bus, tram, train combos make it not too difficult.

This (video) is a bit long long (20 mins) but captures the day from Berlin centre to stadium - posted by a club account. Interesting for me to watch as I'm somewhere in the middle of that mass of fans.
For the choreo, over 100k was collected before the final in the last home games. Hence tons of flags, 20 odd thousand number 12 t-shirts and all the rest. Enjoy!

Thats what I remember. A taxi to the ground from the city centre took a lifetime. Thought we were going to miss kick off. In fact we may have.
Going back I dont remember anything. So could have walked, swam or flew. Was treat to plenty of free vodka in the away end from Monchengladbachs finest

I do remember when Eintracht beat us on the Turf, I think 3-1. I was 17. They were technically superb and moved the ball around really well. It was the first time I think I ever saw Burnley really outplayed on our home ground

Stantastic is right, it was the Cricket Field terrace boys singing at that time. I was there watching and singing that particular chant in 1967. The new stand wasn't built until 1970 wasn't it?

Also I seem to remember singing 'Harris is better than Eusebio', not Lochhead,

That was my first ever game . Can't remember anything about the game itself , just the atmosphere and for some reason I was fascinated by the floodlights .

Definitely the cricket field end - that end had gone though by the end of 1967 with the new stand opened in summer 1969.
