Off to Palermo at the weekend and just wondering if anyone has ever been and what they would recommend seeing/doing etc.

Not been to Palermo but if you want to travel around Taormina is and Agrigento are both very nice - but 2 or 3 hours drive away. Etna is near Taormina.

The catacombs are worth a look.
I had to research these for a Tim Burton film.

The Cappella Palatina is stunning.
The drive on the northern coast is worth doing.

Got taken to a club inland in the middle of nowhere - wish I could remember name.

Plenty of good food and drink everywhere - Enjoy!

The big city hall building was used in the final godfather scene, when his daughter was shot on the steps.

The market is worth a wander round, some massive tuna steaks and swordfish steaks if you are cooking for yourself.

Don’t try the tripe. It’s a local delicacy, but it’s a shocker.

Hummmm off there in a couple weeks time , last time i was there was 1990 and only football took centre stage then . Plan to go down the east coast and staying a few nights in a place called Marsala then doing a loop vie Erice , Mazara del Vallo and back to Palermo for a couple of nights .
Taking local transport which is great fun i must say as sometimes it turns up others it dosen't .
Once you get the beaten track not many people speak English don't let that put you off . If you have a sweet tooth you are in for a real treat , you will fine most things quite cheap and the Sicilians are lovey people .

Can’t help with the Palermo side of the island but we car hired and found a few towns where we couldn’t understand the parking signage and as I know fines in Italy can be astronomical we moved on. The direction signage wasn’t much better but we loved the East of Sicily.
If you are hiring might be worth googling Italy traffic signs?

Take the boat trip to the Aeolian Islands. Featuring active volcanos that emit lava straight into the med. Absolutely stunning. Panarea is a n Island with no cars. Completely unspoilt and with the best fish restaurant I have ever visited, run by the same family since WW2. Can't remember the name sorry.
Believe they are a Unesco site. and could well be my favourite place on Earth.

We're going in 3 weeks so I will most definitely keep an eye on this thread.
I have to say the flights from Manchester have only cost £60 each and an apartment in Palermo was only £320 for a week (for 2).

Goodness £60is a great price , I booked out of Dublin and the best price I got months ago was €141 . One thing you need to know is that a lot of small to mid range hotel and apartment only take cash . Now they don't trust the banks for good reason , just make sure you know what you need to pay before you get there as you don't want to be told they want €400 in cash the day you are due to leave for home .

Worst place/biggest dump I've ever been to in my life. Everything in the guidebooks was surrounded by graffitied metal fencing, a half-completed building or completely derelict. Went to the oldest pizza place in the city for dinner one night and the waiter told us the only wine they had was the most expensive bottle on the menu, we left. The only good thing are the shops selling pastries and desserts (like cream horns and stuff), Sicilian pastry is arguably the best in Europe so treat yourself with a coffee.
