Defour "We'll see" about one year extension.

Post by ClaretAndJew » Sat Jun 02, 2018 8:48 am

Seen this and the subsequent translation :

“I certainly have a few years in the Premier League in me, three or even four. I think it’s a nice competition that is pretty good for me too. I have an option with Burnley for another year. We’ll see,”

“Burnley is growing. We are put forward as a relegation candidate every year, but stay in again and again. Our seventh place has provided the necessary respect. If I can grow with Burnley, I do not immediately see a reason to leave.”

“It will be hard to refuse if there was a financially top bid from China.”

“If an offer came in would I stay at Burnley? Probably not. China, America, the Emirates… These are things that you need to consider at the end of your career. If there is a bid that is financially top, you can’t and shouldn’t refuse it.”

Defour told the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws

Hmmm, doesn't sound good. I would always use "we'll see" whenever the kids wanted something, after a while they learnt it really meant "no".

No problem with that, he's only being honest.
At least he days he's happy to stick with Burnley until such time.

Always was and always will be the case with Defour, swayyed by financials, as above let's enjoy him while he's here. If he gets another game.

Same here.

I like Defour, never seems to speak in riddles like most footballers and managers do.

So basically, the best player I've ever seen in a Claret shirt has said he's happy at Burnley, unless a ridiculous wage offer came in from China/ wherever that he'd be stupid to turn down.

Fair enough. What a player he is, let him get on with it whilst he's here then.

He will be here next season that’s the main thing. I don’t think as a business we see Defour as an investment we need a financial return on we just need him to perform to the best of his ability whilst he is here. We can in reality just run down his contract which sounds like it would suit both parties.

Deserves respect for being so honest. Can't blame him for wanting extra money towards the end of his career.
If a Chinese team did come in they'd probably offer a big fee too.
Fine footballer. Pleasure to have seen him play for us.

Most gifted player seen at Turf Moor for many a year. That said JBG will carry on the good work as he did last year when Steven got injured

If JBG keeps on progressing as he did last season, he’ll be some player.

nothing wrong with that article, ALL football dealings revolve around money and agents and lengthy negotiations thesedays, be it individuals or sponsors for the clubs. Its a huge corporate monster.
It seems odd looking back at times when transfers were unusual, clubs did not operate this "revolving doors " policy.
The modern era has made it all quite fleeting. Shame if we lose such a talent as Defour though, purely from a football point of view.
On his day he is pure class, a joy to watch.

Pretty normal negotiating tactic.

You wouldn't waltz into a car showroom declaring your love for a particular car. Pretend you don't care either way and you might get a better deal

Honest it may be, but some might argue it's a "come and get me" statement!

Longer he spends here, the better. Having players of his quality here can only increase the chances of other players of his quality actually considering coming here.

You either get him, or you are a numbskull. ;)

Fair enough.

Sounds like him doing another year with us, playing in Europe again, culminating in us triggering the year but being open to offers for him from China etc. is fair all round.

Decent chance we'll get 3 years out of him and still, at the very least, break even on his transfer fee.

If he comes back from injury and has a very good start we might well get a silly big offer from China for him so could actually make a profit on him. Interesting times.

How much money do footballers need before they say, “I want to be happy”?

We learned the other week that our first team average £1m per season and he’s been playing over 10 years on very good money.

It’s called “striking why the fires hot” or being greedy by others.

“It will be hard to refuse if there was a financially top bid from China.”

From what I could read from the article, that was a direct response to the following question: Would you say no to a bid from China?

More of an off spinner and great opening batsman, doubt he'll be keeping wicket any time soon.

Excellent player for us. And a refreshing news story even though hes not exactly declaring his undying love and eternal commitment to us.

If hes motivated by money and an exotic lifestyle and we are the platform for him to get that its good all round. For us and him.

Im never convinced though being motivated by money alone is a good thing. And a recipe for success or happiness.

Best player ive seen for us. And probably my favourite player. But we wouldnt and shouldnt break our pay structure for someone whos 30. Has an injury record. And will always seek attention from elsewhere.

We are at the level now where we could attract another Defour.
