Government Alcohol Limit Guidelines

by FactualFrank
The government recommends that we should have at least 2 alcohol-free days per week. Also, men should apparently drink no more than 4 units a day and women no more than 3. And according to these same guidelines the official weekly intake limit for men is 21 units.

But 5 days at 4 units is 20 units, which means a man has to break one of the rules to get to his weekly allowance. Women on the other hand are only allowed 14 units a week meaning that if they stick to the daily rules they break the weekly one.

To keep everybody happy, once a week a man should pour his wife half a lager or a small glass of wine and drink it himself.

Nope. It's a combination authoritarian punch UNDER THE AUSPICES of good health i.e drive everybody to drink and then tell them to watch their consumption.

14 units for men now. If you are drinking a lot every night there's a problem. In moderation no problem.

What if there are 3 adults in your house that don't drink at all?

There is lots of contradictory advice depending on who funds the research. I'd sooner drink what I want and if I die twelve months sooner better that then sat on a dementia ward for an extra 365 days. In fact the more I drink the more tax that creates to keep the non drinking non smoking puritans in nursing homes .

Aye, for men, it's 14 in the UK now- but still 21 in Ireland (a few more still in the USA).
It's all a bit arbitrary, in Spain the recommended max appears to be 35 units.

Get the rioja out, Salud!

I can't afford to sup the good stuff at the rate I drink the cheap stuff unfortunately.

That's why my craft intake is limited to about 20 cans a week but the Stella is still the every day juice.

I can honestly say that since giving up in December 2014 it's made me feel healthier.

I'd highly recommend it.

Government guidelines, well they sertainly bring out plenty about everything.
What strikes me is the fact that you can take heed of all these guidelines and eventually ----you die.
Alternatively, you can ignore all these guidelines and eventually ----you die.
I'm with PaintYorkClaretnBlue on this one ---you are only here once so give the ball a bloody good kick!

Hi Jimmy, I've stopped drinking other than 0.0% alcohol beers - actually highest I allow myself is 0.5% - cut down on red meat (eat more fish), eat a lot more fruit and veg (not all my veg is green), try and walk 10,000 steps every day plus 60 mins vigorous exercise once a week (but, not a lot of running) and the medics advise drinking 3 litres of water a day.... and the pies have also gone....

All this for health reasons ... I'm now a lot fitter and enjoying life... and looking forward to the Clarets in Europa...

Though, 3 litres of water a day is a challenge.

Good on you Paul, but if you hate being like that (not saying that you do) what’s the point? I’d sooner enjoy life and go a bit earlier than drag it out being miserable.

Hi PYCnB, I'm very happy and very much enjoying life - though life was also v.good before I had heart attack. Thing is, I'm not sure the choice is to "go a bit earlier..." By the law of averages and in good health I want to be enjoying life for many, many more years.

Among the changes I'd like made - all pubs to be required to stock at least 2 good alcohol free beers - rather than just Becks Blue. Still, I read last week that Camra will have a Dutch "zero alcohol" beer at their festival in London in August. Cheers!

Everything in moderation... You cant beat a nice beer garden pint at this time of year.

Although tbh rarely drink much at all these. Not necessarily because I dont like it or dont want to. Just enjoy stuff that doesnt involve it a massive amount more than stuff that does. Im almost always the designated driver too and I prefer driving over being driven thankfully.

Rarely if ever drink in the house. And hardly ever drink at the match these days. The latter used to be almost a routine. It helps that I drive to most away games and home games they sell watered down ****. So I dont see the appeal in paying to drink something I wouldnt be paid to drink... Enjoy both home and away games much more. And although I can handle a hangover I dont miss the beer fear one bit.

Holidays with mrs dont involve hardly any drink at all and its great. Although Holidays with the lads might be a bit more cultured these days but havent changed that much 8-)

Also find the less I drink the less **** decisions I make 8-) :D

People who say you are boring for not drinking are generally the boring ones who cant think of anything to do but drink....

Interesting. Some of my my most stupid decisions have been made when younger and very drunk but also some of my most inspirational and great business ideas have come off the back of one or two or a glass of wine. I think it's a shame if people can't enjoy a drink without it getting out of control but agree life is to be enjoyed.

You don't I agree. I'm just saying if people can't control it it is a shame. I know of an alcoholic and it can be damn ugly. On the other hand I had a grandpa in his 90s who enjoyed a few drinks and eventually was advised to cut down but he couldn't see the point at that age if it was what he enjoyed and I agree.

What a load of tosh.

I'm brewing a Saison and this is taken from it's Wiki...
"As a beer style, saison began as a pale ale brewed in the cooler, less active months in farmhouses in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium, and stored for drinking in the summer months.[1] These farmhouse beers would have been of a lower ABV than modern saisons—around 3 to 3.5% ABV on average, rising in the early 20th century to between 4.5 and 6.5% ABV.[2] In the Middle Ages, the low-gravity beer was served as a clean source of hydration for workers who consumed an average of five liters per day.[3] Brewing outside the summer months was common for all brewers before the discovery of refrigeration, due to the likelihood of the beer spoiling while fermenting in the summer, the height of airborne bacteria activity. Farmers possibly also brewed during the cooler months to provide work for their permanent staff during the quieter period.[4] After brewing, the beer was stored until the summer when the main consumers would be seasonal workers ("saisonniers").[5]"

we live in an era when medics know there is an obesity epidemic, but the big high street shops are brimming with unhealthy s**** that fills the trolley's of thousands each week.
They pussyfooted about with cigarettes, and forced the price sky high instead of just ceasing to sell them.
Alcohol is widely available and advertised, just watch the upcoming adverts as the world cup is about to begin.
But we are seemingly not capable of restraint as adults. They criminalise drugs, but allow the worst and most dangerous stuff to be part of day to day living. Total stupidity.

To stop drinking beer surely you must not really "get"how good a nice pint is. I mean why would I want to not experience the sheer unadulterated pleasure of a couple of pints of ale on a Friday night or an ice cold lager on a hot day ? Bad time to stop too with so many good craft ales now on the scene.
