Others have followed with the same story - looks as though, from tonight, we'll have two England goalkeepers at Burnley.

Southgate said yesterday he wanted to see everybody play before setting off. I took that as he would be coming on.

Unbelievable if this turns out to be correct. Two present day England keepers and who would argue against them being the best two too?

Re: Pope to make England debut
Has a club ever had two current England International keepers? I think Leicester had lost Banks before Shilton was capped.

Excellent news. And very well done. A great recognition to not only Pope and Heaton but also Dyche, Billy Mercer the scouts and the club.

Re: Pope to make England debut
Where did I say Stoke and Everton were big clubs. Just mentioned that those in the media that kiss the asses of the big clubs are the same type of people that will be touting for Pickford and Butland as they are "big names". They will always be media Darlings unless Pope or Heaton get a move to a more fashionable club that pay the larger wages.Socrates wrote:Yeah ...... those massive clubs Stoke and Everton.

Would be odd to take Nicky Pope to Russia, without him having ANY game time before he went...he might HAVE to play in Russia [if there are injuries OR sending off plus ban..]

Re: Pope to make England debut
It's going to be interesting to see if they both stay over the next window. I hope they do but I just find it difficult to see England international goalkeepers willing to sit on the bench. Good/great goalies don't fall out of trees. Even if they aren't seriously 'established' yet no-one can take those caps away.

A mistake or two and Pope will get all sorts of flak because he is from Burnley FC. A faultless performance and we will be unindated with transfer offers for Nick.

Re: Pope to make England debut
Should be giving Butland a full game. Pope is rightly 3rd choice and no chance of playing in the tournament so seems pointless taking valuable game time away from Butland and Pickford

Butland is second choice so also got very little chance of playing. What difference does it make if he only plays one half tonight ?
Its clearly not pointless handing a player his first cap.

Re: Pope to make England debut
It really would be great to see him given some game time but fear that unless the other two drop dead it won’t happen before or during the WC.
The main reason is the managers view I.e. “They are both good with their feet, Jordan is exceptional I think. In international football, the number of touches with your feet far outweigh the number of touches with your hands.”
As important as a keeper being good with their feet is I would think that being an excellent shot stopper and the VG season he has had would at least see him get on tonight.

Last game before the tournament isnt the time to play lets give people caps and Butland is running Pickford close for 1st choice so I think its important to give him more game timeTVC15 wrote:Is that what you want to happen ?

Im not bothered about Pope getting capped tonight because in the coming years he'll get his caps and has every chance of eventually being first choice. For now im more concerned about getting Butland in above Pickford cos i think Butlands the best keeper we've got at the moment

Pope is better than BOTH of them, the stats back this up but he never gets a look in!

Noticed Lee Dixon & Wrighty in the studio.
1 played for BFC at start of career, one at end. Could be a good omen

You wouldn't even know he was in the squad. It is Pickford then Butland and probably Walker after that.

Are Burnley fans not allowed to prioritise their national teams interests over the interests of a Burnley player?ecc wrote:"Should be giving Butland a full game. Then we would have a keeper making his England debut in the WC, not at all helpful for all sorts of obvious reasons.
That’s why it would seem silly not to blood Pope tonight.
Re: Pope to make England debut
Southgate your having a laugh! Pope doesn't even get the 2nd half of tonights friendly? I thought he said he was going to give all the squad a chance to prove they deserve a chance? Lies n more lies.

The game isn't over yet, he'll get a token 10-20 minutes, he's been promised it.Claretuk wrote:Southgate your having a laugh! Pope doesn't even get the 2nd half of tonights friendly? I thought he said he was going to give all the squad a chance to prove they deserve a chance? Lies n more lies.

Or was it just assumed he would?
