On BBC2 at the moment.

Last time I saw them on telly I think was Glastonbury a couple of years ago when Alex Turner had adopted an American accent.

Now he seems to be doing some sort of club singer routine.

Made some great records but what's he playing at? Is it some sort of joke that's gone over my head?

He’s a Genius. Musically he’s so far ahead of anybody else it’s scary.

Back in 2005 they made the video for “Dancefloor” to look like an episode of “The old grey whistle test”. If you heard their latest song “four out of five” he references that very program. Thats why it was filmed in such a way. Those very cameras used for tonight were used for “Dancefloor” and earlier “The old grey whistle test”.

They were a class band but the above comment about the latest dross they've released actually being genius that the majority are presumably too unrefined to get is hilarious. Also feel like AT might look back on this period of his life and cringe when he gets older, but then again maybe not, Morrissey and others just got more and more out of touch with reality as they aged.

Good band, no doubt about that, but genius ? not sure about that, it's all subjective at the end of the day.

AM was a fantastic album and live they are great band - and he is one of the best front men in recent years.
However - jury is definitely out on the latest release. It’s very self indulgent and far too much influenced by Bowie - and unfortunately some of Bowie’s poorer stuff. It might grow on me as I listen to it more - but I doubt it.

The biggest shame is that they are deciding to play most of it in this years live gigs - this might be just about acceptable to his hard core fans at an indoor gig in front of 2,000 fans but at the big gigs and festivals it is going to be a massive let down for many people.

He’s not the type to really care though !

So....U2 or Arctic Monkeys? Who gets the award?

I love Arctic Monkeys and they are probably my favourite band of recent times. I like the new album but don’t love it. It’s one of those that you’ve really got to be in the mood to listen to. I watched the BBC live show last night and you really can’t beat their bigger rock songs (R U Mine, Do I Wanna Know). I really wish he would have done this album solo or potentially with Miles Kane. It feels strange seeing Alex Turner on the keyboards. I think there will be a hiatus from them after this album which I don’t think would be necessarily a bad thing. Still looking forward to the live shows and can’t wait to see what they announce for next summer. Hopefully a couple of stadium gigs.

His song writing knows no boundaries. The way he uses words is incredible. For instance describing a special girl who is one in a million “you’re rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock and those other girls are just post mix lemonade”. Or the rain “the rain is trying to prove a point outside”

But as we know. Music is subjective. But I know theres a lot of music lovers on here and it’s great we have a truly great band still around.

I can’t stand U2
Arctic Monkeys are one of the best and innovative bands in years.
Like I said i’m not yet sure on the new album but the fact that every album they produce is so different to the last is very Bowieesque....Turner will never conform or write music purely to please his fans or his record company and I like that.

Whereas that tw-at Bono thought he could burden us all with his sh-ite music by junk mailing the world his album on i tunes !

All about opinions though !!

Yes. People have all these opinions without having listened to their music. As TVC says. He does what he wants. Always has. Their still relevant 13 years after their debut album. Every album different. Everybalbum write in a completely different way. He was 17/18 when he wrote the debut. He write Humbug just a few years later.

Don't get me wrong, I like some of their stuff and they can be very clever lyrically, but they aren't even the best at that out of Sheffield.. Jarvis cocker and pulp better.

I won't knock your statement, but I agree with what others are saying. I don't mind the band, but they are quite ordinary. Bands I've seen in the last couple of years that are doing something that's isn't pedestrian: Moonlandingz, Car Seat Headrest, Goat Girl, Madonnatron, Cherry Glazer, Courtney Barnett, Baxter Dury, Nadine Shah, Idles, Meatraffle.

He’s entering a World of Pain....

Very good in their earlier days but they have become very self indulgent after early commercial success. One of their Saturday night Glasto headlines was as dull as I've seen in years as they slowed songs down and put a twist on them etc.

I get people may not like them etc. But to call them pedestrian is crazy. They had the world at their feet in 07/08 yet decided to lock themselves away and make “Humbug” the album they wanted to make rather than what their fans wanted them too. Then again with Tranquility Base they’ve done it after the massive success of “AM”. People will criticise them because commercially their songs aint that attractive to the casual listener anymore. Each and every album is different. A completely different style of songwriting.

Glastonbury 2013 was brilliant. Watching their set helped me rediscover my love for music that night.

So making a video look like an old, and very popular I hasten to add, programme qualifies as genius, does it?

Humbug is by far their best album, but genius he/they ain't. Also worth noting that they've gone back to being average once Josh Homme wasn't involved.
