Burnley players in the world cup finals.
Living in the Derby area there was a quiz question asking how many Derby players had played in the world cup finals.Well the answer is 11,and i thought surely Burnley will have had more than that. So,what do you reckon guys?Players have to have been Burnley players at the time, and of course played in the World cup finals.I know Billy Hamilton is one for a starter.

Well I'd like to know which 11 Derby players (at the time) they were.

Colin McDonald
Jimmy Mac
John Connelly. Wrong. In the Chile squad but no game time. Played in ‘66 but had left for Manure.

Re: Burnley players in the world cup finals.
Billy Hamilton & Tommy Cassidy are the only two who have actually played in my years of watching Burnley and I think Jimmy Mac & Colin McDonald are the only other two.

Re: Burnley players in the world cup finals.
I saw Billy Hamilton score two good goals in the 1982 World Cup in Spain against Austria.. [McCreery, Brotherston, Whiteside etc] in the second group stage in the Vicente Calderon stadium [Athletico Madrid] - Hans Krankl was the big name for the Austrians. I was hanging about for a couple of days waiting for Spain vs England in the Bernebeu.
- that Ireland match was a hot one...3.00 pm 1st July, in Madrid and open stands, no roofs...Billy H. played a blinder.
** the ticket touts got a financial kicking that day [brilliant] - Spain had been expected to win the group in the first stage but a Gerry Armstrong goal for N.I. against Spain ensured a big surprise result and the Irish won the group. There were dozens of touts about with fistfuls of tickets who had been expecting a Spain match..about 10,000 fans turned up to a stadium holding about 90,000...I paid about 250 pesetas [£1] for a ticket from a grumpy tout..result..

Of the Derby players, I can remember three Scots, Dailly, Rioch and Masson with, I think, Mark Wright - not the current poncey TV celeb - for Eng-er-land.
Oh and Stimac of Croatia.
Pretty sure they had a dreadful American defender too but I can't remember his name.
