I thought we were on for 500 but losing Hales & Morgan in successive balls put paid to that, particularly with Root coming in when we could have done with someone to give it a real go in the last few overs.

Still, an incredible score and an absolute joy to watch.

We struggle to make that in a Test match.

One of those days where, as a bowler, you are NOT trying to "catch the captain's eye" and offering to bowl.
The most economic (least hammered) bowler went for 7 per over; four of 'em went for 10.5 or more per over.
When the first wicket falls at 159 in the 20th over and Alex Hales walks out on his home ground (and Butler, Morgan etc still in the pavilion) - you have to feel a bit threatened.
Australia have some big hitters but "scoreboard pressure" will be huge. I think England's bowlers will take the pace off/vary the pace more than Oz did too.
If Australia get anywhere near this that'll be a fantastic achievement.

When was the last time we scored 480+ in a test match? Melbourne? When Cook got a double?

The Aussies didn't quite make it to half of England's target then. You almost feel sorry for them trying to chase the score England got (but then you realise how "uncompromising" their teams can be and allow yourself a very satisfied big grin.

County Durham Thursday then Old Trafford Sunday, see if we can really rub it in. I'm guessing there are one or two who post on here going to Manchester on Sunday - weather seems set fair for that.

Cricket is in a strange state of affairs at the moment. We're struggling to get 250/ 300 in a 5 day Test that invariably last 3 days. Yet we can hit 400 plus in a limited 1 day game. Somethings not quite right.

Having said that, any hammering of the smug Aussies, is just fine by me.

Until the last six or so overs the Aussie bowlers were clueless and just kept feeding Bairstow, Roy, Hales and Morgan to their strengths.

The Aussie captain is young and inexperienced and it showed today.

His field positioning was very poor at times but the bowlers aren't good enough now they can't cheat.

Re a few comments earlier in the same vein as this:
For ODIs, pitches tend to be prepared to favour batsmen (and boundaries often moved in a bit)
White ball doesnt swing so much/do anything much for the bowler
Fielding restrictions mean it's more difficult to defend when batsmen are going well
Bowling restrictions re wides- especially down leg side

Having said all that - there's also the matter of mind-set; in the shorter format, batsmen are more concerned with racking up runs quickly than losing their wicket + bowlers a bit more concerned with "economy" rather than getting a few wickets.

England's women cricket team today posted a world record T20 score of 250/3 against S. Africa. Well done them.

Aye, I watched some of that on TV, from Taunton (generally a batters' paradise). South Africa first played New Zealand & NZ broke the previous top score record with 216-1; then later in the day SA played England and Eng superseded even that with 250-3.
Not a great day to be a South African bowler or fielder! A couple of the SA bowlers were embarrassingly poor and their fielding started poor & got worse.
Two of the SA bowlers went for 59 runs each in their 4 overs v England.
The 3 teams play each other twice in all at Taunton/Bristol over the next week or so every possibility of more punishment to come for those poor South African twirlers.
