You can't go far wrong if you get something from the Kent catalogue. By far the best of the NS compilers.

I have a hell of a lot of the Goldmine Soul Supply stuff. They are usually excellent compilations. I used to frequent their shop which used to be in an old precinct in Manchester where Harvey Nichols is situated now. It then moved to Tibbs St. Unfortunately now though that shop has been consumed by the ever growing number of bars in the Northern Quarter

This is 'probably' the best Northern Soul compilation ever released. It tells the whole story right from the Twisted Wheel beginnings (Baby Reconsider - Leon Haywood on the FAT FISH record label) and is very good sound quality. It is expensive but will prove to be an excellent future investment. Maybe not for the NS beginner but definitely for those of us who were lucky enough to be there first time round.

That was my intention as I live in Hampshire now!!!!
Goldmine stuff used to be Tim Brown from Todmorden but I don't think he is still doing it. No doubt someone local may have better info. Goldmine vinyl reissues could be of dubious quality but I can't speak for their CDs as I haven't got any.
Just had a quick look on Discogs and there are loads of CDs to choose from. But there is a lot of duplicated stuff and some of the more rare and esoteric isn't on CD it appears. But certainly plenty to chose from for a new NS fan.

Corky - the Goldmine stuff is all deleted now, as Tim went on to start Outa Sight (spelling?). You'll see plenty of Goldmine cds on ebay and Discogs and some command very high prices. There are 200 in the Goldmine series. My faves are The Twisted Wheel Story ones but they predate the "Northern" era.

Hi Dazzler
I'm afraid I can't do that. I have absolutely no idea how to download tunes from the computer.
I have a record player which is plugged into an Amp which I then feed via an Aux cable into a TEAC CD recorder. So I simply get the vinyl record out of my collection and stick a blank CD in the recorder and push all the right buttons and off we go. I can normally get 28/30 tunes on a CD.
Your 3 compilations are what I would term classic Northern Oldies. Nothing wrong with those but nothing like what I put on the CD for Cocker Claret.
More than happy to replicate my CD if you want. It had stuff like Purple Mundi Stop Hurting Me Baby, George Byrd I'm Available, Natural Four I Thought You Were Mine on Boola Boola which is the original and a bit slower than the one on ABC, Frankie Beverly Because Of My Heart, Soul Incorporated My Proposal and so on.
Let Me know.

I put it on whilst working monday night and to be honest I don't think I let one track go the full distance.Like I Said to Siddo,I'm far from being a full blown connoisseur of Northern Soul.
I might give it another whirl tonight.
I played my choice of Northern Soul (Kindly recorded by siddo) most of that night and the majority of my customers were absolutely loving the sounds.

As you may well know, the term 'northern soul' is only used in the UK.In North America they use the term 'rare soul'.whatever sound it may be..Motown sound,Funky,Jazz,R&B,Chicago Soul,Philadelphia soul....etc

Getting more established as Northern these days though you're right Dazzler.... they even resisted it down south for years, but the term is now accepted in the UK and its getting into the USA too these days. Part of our business is Mod orientated and the number of Northern badges going over there from just our little firm is up with the Mod and Ska stuff these days.... even had three or four "Wigan Casino... the legend lives on" and "I was there" with the night owl logo. I had an Hispanic lad from LA order one just they other day.... I thought, pretty sure you weren't lol
