I'm sure that those wonderful chaps in FIFA are now regretting paying him 10K per match as an ambassador. This could be his last FIFA funded "freebie," which is a comforting thought.

Not one sided though- have you heard Terry Butcher talking about him over the last few weeks? He clearly hates him with a passion.

Strange how his outburst about England 'cheating' comes from a man who punched a ball into the net and had the audacity to call it 'the hand of god', thereby openly admitting he cheated. I get the impression he is not blessed with too much intelligence. Still, looking at him these days I'd say life hasn't been too kind to him.

As previously mentioned, this odious fat little rat get paid £10, 000 per appearance as a FIFA ambassador.

This after he openly admitted to cheating to win football matches, abused cocaine, failed a drugs test at the 1994 World Cup, got a drug 15 month ban, oh and recently waved the middle finger at South Korean fans at this WC.

No wonder he was a 'genius' on the football field in the late 80's. He was cheating, plain and simple (both performance enhancing drugs and all the hand ball/ diving/ conning the ref type stuff we know about).

FIFA and Maradona = both made for each other, totally oblivious to the hypocrisy they perpetuate.

Still, looking at him these days I'd say life hasn't been too kind to him.

I would say he has made his own life choices so it is him that hasn't been kind to himself.

As a general point why are we so willing to dismiss, denigrate and besmirch the reputations of people we've never met? We form opinions based on what we see or hear via the media and then feel we can just write someone off with a horrible little comment like that above.
Another thing: we are all, as individuals a result of our genes and environment, things about which we have no control. Maybe you were abused as a child and then go on to abuse others in adulthood, for example. Everything that happens to us influences how we are.
So maybe I can suggest a little more compassion on the message board?

I remember Lineker going to interview Maradona a few years ago, saying he didn’t hold any grudges about the Hand of God and that he would have done the same if he thought he could get away with it. Fair to say Butcher was less than impressed with is former team mate...

Maradona in disguise?

He was an absolute genius of a footballer, back when you had some real hatchet men defenders.

Since then, he's made some fairly self-destructive life choices but to be fair, he generally seems to be enjoying himself. He's probably a few months away from his heart exploding but that's up to him I guess.

As for the handball, give it up. A bookable offence and that's all, he got away with it in a huge match and celebrated the fact but it's still far from the worst crime committed on a football field.

Any comments from this cheating cretin should be treated with total contempt.

I don't see why we can't have some creativity on a football message board. I do enjoy a good craft fair though!
You are probably right that that I am ploughing a lonely furrow re. my views on free will versus determinism, but I thought I would give it a go!
By the way I don't know exactly what his role is for FIFA. If he just attends football matches and nothing else then I agree 10 grand seems excessive.
I still think "odious" is overused on this forum. Not my favourite word anyway!

I think most people would see maradona as an indefensible character.

He attends football matches as a 'guest' of FIFA (gets paid handsomely by them to do so), and whilst there, makes abusive gestures to rival fans. Oh, and then makes ridiculous comments about FIFA (you know, them that pay him) referee following Colombia's (cant think what the link is there?) defeat to us.

Thanks for the 'free will v determinism' bit by the way, but I dont think a BSc in Psychology in needed to make a reasonable judgement on Diego Maradona.

If you don't think he's a suitable ambassador for FIFA (although I reckon he's entirely appropriate for that organisation) then that's an issue for them, not him. He's hardly likely to turn down that gig.

And making abusive gestures to rival fans.. my goodness, will this depravity never end.

Hello again Lauren. You don't actually need a degree in psychology to get an idea about free will. I just watched some youtube videos! Anyway it's an interesting subject and it helps me to understand why people are the way they are.
I can understand by the way why some might be upset about Maradona's behavior at this world cup. I agree it wasn't very savoury. He's clearly not very well.

I agree with you there Nottsclaret, its an issue for FIFA who they deem suitable to be an ambassador (and these 2 go together perfectly well, so no surprise they choose him) and of course, hand gestures to fans, in the grand scheme of things is nothing (when compared to the other colourful things our friend Diego gets up to).

I suppose at the end of day, as an ordinary football fan, I'm just a bit cynical of the whole (snouts in troughs) thing.

I read his autobiography and I didn't think he came across very well. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder the size of Buenos Aires. He's a washed up drug addict who's only way of staying in the media spotlight is by making outlandish comments like the one yesterday. FIFA should sack him as an ambassador and stop paying for his coke habit!

But he didn't 'lose himself' after playing football, he was taking drugs whilst playing - as mentioned earlier he tested positive at the 1994 WC for performance enhancing drugs. Without doubt an amazing player and I couldn't really give a toss about the handball against us, because he was just a tiny part of the whole culture of cheating that South Americans led the way/ continue to lead the way in.

Did he need to cheat to be the greatest footballer ever? that we'll never know.

I like him, I'd guess he doesn't give a toss what people on here think about him given his legacy.
