Yes its amazing weather at present and I for one love it. The question I have is do you believe it is down to global warming. Had an argument/ debate with a guy at work who said 100% it is down to global because Attenburgh said it would happen. Now I do believe global warming is occuring but surely not to this extent so quickly I said. Mentioning the summers in the 70s when global warming wasnt a thing. What was the cause for them heatwaves and then what did we do in the 40 years to stem the heatwaves. He wasnt having any of it. Any of the intelligent posters on here willing to give their view as everything media based is backing him up.

You have to consider that short term local weather patterns, whilst affected by global conditions, are not linked with global warming. Global warming is happening, and it has been demonstrated by many revered scientists (google is good for info). Our weather will continue to have warm years and cold years irrespective of what is happening globally. The trend is for a global increase in temperature in relatively minute fractions, and it is the increasing nature of these increments that is of concern.
I’m not sure if I’m helping am I...???

Somebody I know used to scoff at the weather reports that say "It's the hottest August for 250 years, and this is all because of global warming", as an example.
His response was always along the lines of what was happening 250 years ago then that made it so hot

I don't claim to be a Meteorologist, but i feel this exceptional weather we're having at the moment is further proof it's coming home, enjoy.

Pretty much my argument i was using about hot and cold years not being down fully to global warming and that the effects of that are over a much longer time period. Cant choose who you work with ha ha

How long is it since we were all bracing ourselves for The Beast From the East?
Long, cold, snowy winter followed by a long hot summer.
It's the sort of weather my parents used to talk about from their childhood.

It's all down to the jetstream which has a habit of moving about a bit now and then.
At the moment it's in the right position to give us this hot weather.
That's my take on it for what it's worth.
PS Sod all to do with global warming.

First decent long spell of hot weather for about 20 years this - since The Style Council sang about that long hot summer just passing them by probably !

As I remember, no one mentioned global warming in 1976.
Or maybe it just wasn't known about then?

In the seventies they thought a new ice age was coming. Wonder what will be the Truth in another 40 years.

Global Warming was a misleading description. They should have said Increase in Extreme Weather. And that is what we have seen around the globe with incredible floods or tremendous fires.
The Planet is slowly warming up but only by a few degrees. Doesn’t sound bad does it?
But the ice caps are melting at an incredible rate. Plankton the start of the food chain cannot live in warmer waters. If they die, the main source of fish is gone.
We’ve had a very traditional weather year so far...cold snowy winter followed by rain and then 2 months of sun. If this continues we might see the 1976 hottest year record broken. No I don’t think it’s down to global warming.

There’s no question there’s a change in climate globally, more flooding, more drought, earlier hurricane season, etc, etc. Whether it’s man made or cyclic is debatable. Here in Southern Ontario we had our worst winter for quite a while, colder than normal, more snow than normal. Many referred it to ‘an old time Canadian winter’. Currently we’re going through an intense heat event, records are being broken, at time of writing it's 33 degrees C, feels like 41 degrees C with humidity factored in. That’s reaching dangerous levels. It’s been like this for the past week, supposed to break this evening with a cold front coming through. Back to more seasonal temp tmw……hopefully…..it’s ugly hot out.

Yep... I've had a few "high emissions cars" along the way...
You can thank me personally for this glorious weather!

The main heating of the atmosphere is being found at the Poles and the areas around them. This is disrupting the normal heat sinks that drives the planet's weather systems, hence more extreme weather events.
The world's weather has fluctuated for millennia but reasonably accurate weather records for localities date back to only the mid 1800s (when the world was recovering from the effects of the mini ice age)with diarists and local lore from earlier times being sourced for data that is debatably accurate or not. Tree rings are good for showing whether it was a good growing year or not but not for telling us the reason(s) behind that growth.
One of the problems Climate scientists have is that they struggle to find a computer model that will allow the major global heating that took place in the 10th - 13th centuries and previously in the 4th - 7th centuries whilst, using the same model, being able to re-enact the mini ice age of the 16th-19th centuries. Until they can do that they will find it difficult to accurately predict what effect climate change will have across the globe.
