Just drove over the level crossing at Brierfield and there are a number of police cars parked up and incident tape across the track

Sounds like someone has probably been hit by a train. It's happened a few times on that stretch of track if my memory is right?

Horrible for the people who have to sort out the scene. I used to think quite blithely that anyone hit by a train would be hit, killed and neatly flung to the side of the track. Bad enough.
Truth is, most folks go under the train fot its whole length of the train and suffer horrific damage because of it.

Mate, why the hell do they try and take a shortcut across the track? Really not worth it. As you say they are still alive under the train as they're getting dragged along for at least a mile before they pass out! They won't do that again in a hurry!

Apparently it's more akin to a mincing machine. It could, of course, have been a suicide assuming someone and not a thing has been hit.

What kind of thing? A boulder or something?

I think you misunderstand.
It's not likely to have been caused by someone taking a short cut.
I don't know for sure what's happened but most of us will draw a different conclusion to yours.
Very sad for everyone concerned.

How do you know where the incident happened?. They get a bit of speed up between Burnley Central and Brierfield -though I would admit that even at maximum speed it's not like an "intercity" line.

It seems to be opening up again, according to their Twitter account.

As a technician on the trains I’ve seen this regularly. We don’t get much damage to the train to be honest. We have to carry out a number of safety tests and inspections before we release it to traffic. There is an external team that clean them but they don’t always get everything. I’ve seen the front end of a few trains after incidents. Not pretty.

Bud, if they can't manage to clean /scrape everything off the front I'd recommend your lot hire another external team who can actually do their job!

Mate, I don't get that. Pretty vague. Any news on what happened yet? In Scotland it's pretty common to have jakeys messing around on the platforms and taking shortcuts across the track. A few cans and people think they're invincible. There was a cctv video doing the rounds of the subway in Glasgow, a jakeys can rolled off the platform onto the track when he went to fetch it...well you know the rest...was wedged between train and platform the top half of his body dragged about 30 metres along the platform gap like a spinning top before the train stopped.
Then he takes a drink out of the Can!

What gives you the right to call someone you know little about a "Scottish prick". I have seen nothing offensive or untoward in what he has written since we got Aberdeen in the Europa league. Story on lancs telegraph now saying it was a likely suicide, tragic for all concerned.

As a side note,anyone remember Johnny B.Goode,the tramp?
Think he did himself on that line near the Central,quite a character back in the 80's.I always remember the bikers from the Broadsword,chucking bottles at him from the balcony as he collected his cans from the bin.

I was on the train concerned, coming home from work.
It happened just Brierfield side of the prairie, there was no road access nearby so the emergency services had to walk along the track from Brierfield station. Train suddenly screached to a halt and I felt shudder on the track. We were stuck there about 2 and a half hours before the police allowed the train to move. A replacement crew had to be brought in cos the existing driver and guard could not continue. Police described it as a serious incident, but everyone on the train knew what it was. Very sad.

29 year old man. Very sad.

Just googling the incident shows how freqently this happens, it is a shocking indictment that our society does so little for men’s mental health. I have suffered over the years, and now I see my 18 year old son walking headlong into depression but there’s very little I can do to help or stop it. Until us blokes can open up and feel like we can without being ridiculed this “disease” won’t go away.

My thoughts are with the young mans family at this terrible time.

Youre absolutely right Rick. And its not just those with a clear MH issue. There's many who didnt seem to present with anything.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 40, and committed by people who are very unlikely to actually tell you what they are going to do.

Not surprised with the crap they put up with these days.
