The last two clubs that Bardsley left got relegated the next season. I think I’d rather not chance it

There's no way both Dawson and Mawson would join us, knowing that either one of them will spend the entire season on the bench.

Clucas has been relegated every season he's played in the premier league.

£58 million for Dawson, Mawson and JayRod excluding wages. Glad the OP is not running BFC.

We can't sign both Dawson and Mawson.
Imagine how confused the scoreboard operator would become never mind the guy with the microphone.

I agree but that got us to 7th and behind that we'd have a second 11 stronger than ever before and you'd guess that 3 or 4 would be in the starting 11 come the end of the season...

It's the way of the world unfortunately. Petrol is no longer 42p a litre either.

Wouldn't that make for an interesting comparison. Petrol prices versus record signings.
2017/18 - Wood - £15m vs £5.36 a gallon
2016/17 - Brady - £14m vs £4.72 a gallon
2015/16 - Gray - £11m vs £4.99 a gallon
2009/10 - Fletcher £4m vs £4.08 a gallon
2008/09 - Paterson £1.7m £4.72 a gallon
2001/02 - Blake £1.2m vs £3.68 a gallon
2000/01 - Moore £1m vs £3.89 a gallon
1998/98 - Davis £800k vs £3.23 a gallon
1991/92 - Davis £600k vs £2.28 a gallon
1983/84 - Waldron £90k vs £1.64 a gallon
All sources transfermarket website.
1983's record signing was worth 549 gallons, Chirs Wood is worth 27,985 gallons of petrol

Does that mean we should rein our transfer business in a bit...

But petrol prices are unfairly influenced by OPEC - a global cartel.
A much better indicator of relative value would be something more stable - like Twix bars !!!

Yeah we'd win the reserve league title but if we spent £70M on transfer fees i'd expect 3 automatic starters to slot into the starting 11.

In 1969 I worked on the pumps at Tillotson's on Manny Rd at the weekends once I was 16. Petrol was a whole 6/0d a gallon which is 30p. You would struggle to get from there to the Waggoners and back on 30p of unleaded now.

Mawson and probably Bryan I agree with - although the latter depends on our plans for Taylor.
The rest simply aren’t worth it for me - think of what you could genuinely do to the starting XI with £51 million. Think of what you could genuinely do to the recruitment team with just a small portion of that number....

Wouldn't this make for an interesting comparison. Record transfer fee and what it would be now taking inflation into account
2017/18 - Wood - £15m = £15.6m today
2016/17 - Brady - £14m = £14.7m today
2015/16 - Gray - £11m = £11.77m today
2009/10 - Fletcher £4m = £5.08m today
2008/09 - Paterson £1.7m = £2.244m today
2001/02 - Blake £1.2m = £1.92m today
2000/01 - Moore £1m = £1.65m today
1998/98 - Davis £800k = £1.384 today
1991/92 - Davis £600k = £1.296 today
1983/84 - Waldron £90k = £302,400 today

Bonkers that isn't it? Just shows how finances in football are out of touch with the changes in the price of every day products.
It's not even a supply and demand issue is it. More a case of clubs know they each have more money now so lets just bump the prices up. Still, none of this matters now Garlick is making it rain.

That's the question though isn't it? What can you do with £51m now, who would you sign?
I personally would like to see a summer of recruiting ready made players to give us a squad as strong as described and then invest in youth/infrastructure to keep the squad strong.

I think people outside of Burnley would think that that would be the case here. I'm sure there would be plenty of hypothetical arguments that:
Dawson > Lowton
Mawson > Mee
Bryan > Ward
Clucas > Gudmundsson
Rodriguez > Barnes
Certainly would be nice problems to have.

Well for a start I don’t think I’d pursue potential squad players from relegated Premier League clubs who don’t want, or need to sell them. You can do a lot with £51m, but not when you’re dealing with those sort of clubs.

I agree with this. I'm all for strengthing the squad but I'd want a decent chunk of money spent on first team quality leaving the old first teamers to take the back-up positions.
On the whole we've done that in most windows under Dyche. Cork and Wood are two examples from last year. You could argue Brady and Defour before that. Even all the way back to the beginning we've signed a decent mix of first team quality and "squad" players. When Arfield came in he was more of the "squad player" type, but great things happened with him. On the whole I agree with your sentiments but I think Dyche deserves to be given till the end of the window before he's judged. So far it's been disappointing, and if we don't get any first teamers in then I'll be just as disappointed as you. In my opinion we've wasted a good opportunity so far, if we get beat by Aberdeen then we're out of Europe and one of our biggest bits of pulling power will have gone.
Even despite all that I'll remain hopeful until the last!
