Just seen on TV that Paul Madeley, ex Leeds & England, has died at the age of 73

A very elegant player was Paul Madeley.........

Filled in almost anywhere in the team. But he was much better than that. He told Sir Alf Ramsey that he didn't wish to be included in England's 1970 WC squad as he needed a rest and was unlikely to play...

A decent footballer in a team of absolute animals. RIP.

Very much an integral part of a successful Leeds team and he was a very good player who could play anywhere on the park.

Just heard Eddie Gray on the radio talking about him.
He gave a great tribute to Madeley. He said he was anything but a "utility player"...pointing out that utility players don`t play more than 700 games in the top flight.
He said he was just that good he could play in any position...and did play in every position for Leeds (other than keeper) including centre forward. He said Paul Madeley was the first pick on the team sheet every week. He also told a story about when his contract was up for renewal and the manager said to him to come into the office to discuss his new contract. Madeley said to the manager that he was not bothered about the contract and the manager said they needed to discuss the length of the contract and how much he was going to get paid and Madeley said to manager to give him the contract and he would sign and that he just wanted to play for Leeds.

I know Leeds were a dirty team and were disliked by many fans. They had some pretty horrible players but it is interesting how people tend to remember the Liverpool team fondly and generally hate Leeds despite Liverpool having their own thugs like Tommy Smith, Souness and Jimmy Case. Just like the Leeds players whilst these lads were tough / dirty they were also very good players.
That Leeds team of the 70s played some great football and had some brilliant players - I know it winds Leeds fans up immensely that so many people forget how good they were and focus on the dirty side of their game.

I'm fine with Leeds fans being wound up as I dislike their fans a lot but they did have a very good team and I remember Paul Madeley as an absolute class player who was good enough to get in any team in Europe.

The 70's was before my time but didn't most teams have a couple of hard nuts back then,it really was a different era in many respects,Chopper Harris of Chelsea comes to mind for one.

Andy Lochhead and Brian O'Neil could ahem, certainly look after themselves.

Great player.....Always my favourite of the Leeds team of the early 70's. RIP gone too soon.

Sad to hear this. As has been said by a couple of people already he was a gentleman in a team of thugs. Leeds were a great side around then but they would never win a game now in the present atmosphere of players falling over in a stiff breeze and referees hardly allowing physical contact.

Paul Madeley was a decent guy. Hope his family are coping okay.

Paul Madeley...good footballer, proper all round utility player for them....played every position for Leeds United back then, except goalkeeper.

Leeds United fancying themselves a bit..March 1972...winning 7-0....no one liked them though.

I just saw this thread and for a second, thought it was Richard Madeley!!

He was one of the few decent (as in non-thuggish) players in that dark era. Eddie Gray (apart from when he was tormenting our defence) was another.

Slightly before my time the Leeds team of yore and I couldn't care less about English football but Leeds 70's must have the toughest bunch ever.

Watched a documentary on them and there was what can only be described as an all out brawl at Derby's Baseball ground, which always appeared to be a mud bath.

Bremner liked a good scrap and was always backed up by his bigger pals: Norman Hunter, Madeley, Charlton, etc..

Compare that lot to the prima donna metrosexual bi-curious spunkstains of today. No comparison; Proper men.

They weren't that hard individually. Collectively they bullied.

Once met dave mckay at a sportsmans dinner. He must have been 75 then. I wouldnt have messed with him even at that age and with bad knees.

A great player in a team that was far from 'thuggish'. They had one or two players that were quite tough, but I, for one, liked their style of football. Giles, Lorimer, Eddie and Frank Gray, Cooper, Clarke and Madeley. All good players.

I met Dave Mackay once. In the pub after the Irvine/Gilzean hattrick game at WHL.
He didn't play that day and was firmly established in the pub not long after the whistle. We kids walked in the place, saw him and a couple of mates at a table, and stood there gawking. "Come on in lads" was his immediate response. I can only describe his demeanour as pleasant and affable. He had a good chat with all 3 of us and made us feel "great".

I’m with Cloughie on the Leeds Team if that Era. They can throw away all of their Medals, because the win them all cheating.

What did Leeds do that Souness, Smith, Case etc didn’t do for Liverpool.....or Roy Keane, Fergie etc didn’t do for United ?

Most winning teams have at least a couple of hard men who can play but also do the dirty stuff...or the mind games or just pure cheating !!

Leeds started the whole ‘cheating’ attitude in this country. May well have been introduced by the odd foreigner, but Leeds embraced it as a team, and it was directed by don revie.

They may well have had good players, and undoubtedly Paul Madely was one of them, but they were a bunch of cheating bullying thugs, who chose to win games by cheating and thuggery and that’s why people remember them that way. Naming the odd player from other teams and other eras makes you feel better, but those of us who watched this ****, watched it. Clough was bang on the money.

A couple of hard men ...yes. But Leeds had eight or nine. Even supposedly stylish creative players such as Johnny Giles were downright nasty - and often in a sly way. Leeds did not get their reputation for nothing.
