Hi everyone,

On the way to and from Aberdeen over the last couple of days, many things came up in conversation about the history of our club. I think it started when I asked who was the last Claret to score for Burnley in Europe. I’m 34, feel like I know quite a lot about my club, yet I had no idea that Brian Miller was the answer to this fact. 24 hours later, that was adjusted to Sam Vokes.

It got me thinking about a new feature for the site and I put the idea to Tony...he was in the car after all. He said that he thought it was a good idea, that he’d be delighted to form a facts page for reference on the UTC site, but requested that I set the ball rolling...so here I am.


They need to be key facts and stats that can all go on the same page, not interesting trivia such as hat-trick heroes (this is a long list, is available elsewhere on the site and in all truth, despite being interesting, it’s not what I’d consider a ‘crucial fact’).

I would think ideas such as the following would be on the right lines:

Date founded:
Location founded:
Club honours
Managerial honours
Cup honours (venue, score, captain, scorers)
European honours
First £1 million, £5 million, 10 ...£15 million pound player
Longest serving manager

And so the list goes on...


But what I’d like to ask is, what would you want to see on your list? What would you want to show someone who was keen to broaden their knowledge on our history-rich and proud football club?

I really think this could be a crucial reference point and would be used by Clarets if all ages.

Ps...if it goes beyond 50, we could have 75, 100 or perhaps to be fitting, 82 different facts!

I would be interested to know who owned the club pre Bob Lord, and who founded the club.

It should surely include reference to being founder members and that we are one of only a few clubs to win all four divisions.

How much did our first ever game cost to watch (if hard to find go for when we became the Clarets).

Who has the longest affiliation with the club, be it a sponsor, member of staff or board.

Who's our longest serving fan (season tickets consecutively).

Who were our first European opponents.

Who scored our first goal in European competition.

Who's scored the most goals for us.

What happened at the Club during the war years when football was suspended

How loyalty points work.

Who has been our most substituted player.
Ex Players who have worked for the club in other roles. Arthur Bellamy,Jack Butterfield etc

We play the worlds oldest football league derby.
We're the first club to pay players to play.

I think there is a paperback book that has lots of Claret's trivia in it. I'm sure there could be many of the 50 things in it should you need some sort of reference. (You might know most but I don't and I'm way older than you. Did know Brian Miller was the previous last scorer for us in Europe, was there behind the goal at the Cricket Field End). Could look up the book's title if you need it.

The player with the highest win ratio? Excluding one hit wonders obviously

Average attendances year on year
Ticket prices over the years

the most significant or famous matches in our history

A list of "firsts" would be good. What we did or achieved before anyone else.

Some really great points made, thanks! I do think though, that some of you have missed the point a little. Some of the suggestions I don’t feel are crucial stats.

I thought this was a good idea when John mentioned it and thought it would be good asking on a thread. But what a waste of time given some of the responses on here.

I'm guessing it's 85 (ish) places or would you just say last in old division 4 and 7th in Prem?

If you are counting the 4th division then you have to include the “old” first and we’ve won that so it’s 92 places

The transfer targets that very nearly materialised would be excellent.

I think some of you need to read the OP to understand what this is about.
