Excellent European away from home performance, thought in the main we nullified the game well. Walters and Bardsley's experience contributed well to this.

Absolutely woeful to watch, and to anyone who essentially paid £500+ to watch that game I salute you. I would've taken 0-0 before the game however, and it gives us a great chance to progress next week. Really would love to see Defour play a game in Europe (or any game for that matter), his composure would be vital, when at times we've given possession away cheaply tonight. And it really was at a premium. Collectively I thought we looked unsure and sat a tad too deep. Not suprising I suppose, since this is the first game of its ilk we've played. But we're better than that, and we'll need to be.

Hart 6 - Looked composed and made a couple of good saves
Bardsley 5 - Did fine going backwards but a tad wasteful with the ball sometimes
Tarksowski - 6 - Solid enough and a few nice touches
Mee - 7 - Did what he does best, get a foot (or any part of his body) in the way at the vital moment. MOM
Taylor - 5 - Thought positionally he was a little off in the first half and had some trouble 1 v 1, but I don't think Gudmundsson supported him as much as Walters did on the other side
Cork - 6 - Lots of energy and graft, he just needs a cooler head sometimes and loses the ball with options open
Westwood - 5 - He was a little ominous in the middle of the park for me, for someone who does have the quality to keep the ball in that type of game we needed a bit more of him
Hendrick - 5 - Again wasteful with the ball at times and picked the wrong option. Looks a little short on confidence, but the endeavour is there and did his part without the ball
Walters - 6 - Already defended him on other threads, and I'm sure I'm going to be annoyed at some inevitable 4's on here. He was clearly asked to do a job tonight, which was to not leave Bardsley isolated. He did, perfectly well. He wasn't a threat going forward, but no one really was. I'm not saying he was dynamite, but he doesn't deserve undue criticism for that performance.
Gudmunsson - 5 - Did ok, but as stated above I thought he could've helped out Taylor a bit more.
Barnes - 5 - Feeding off scraps, hard to criticise or mark him up really.

Hart - 7 - solid debut with one excellent save.

Bardsley - 7 - snuffed out the threat down his side effectively.

Taylor- 6 - struggled at times but stuck at it and generally hung on. Showed an occasional threat going forwards.

Tarkowski - 8 - rock solid on a night where he was tested plenty.

Mee- 8 - got in his blocks and scrapped his way through - not with the finesse of Tarks but with plenty of quality nonetheless.

Cork - 6 - solid screening performance but needed to use the ball more intelligently on occasions.

Westwood- 5 - like Cork but less effective and more wasteful.

Hendrick - 6 - did his defensive job but given precious little opportunity to get into the game going forwards.

Walters - 6 - fell over too much but stuck at it and did ok.

JBG - 5 - ineffective going forwards and didnt track back as effectively as he usually does.

Barnes - 6 - kept going, evenif it was a tough gig for him at times.

Vokes - 5 - struggled to get a kick if we're honest.


We wont go far in Europe if we cant show more composure on the ball, especially in midfield. We rarely gave ourselves a chance to build an attack, and the way we wasted two well placed free kicks in injury time was indicative of that.

On the other hand; we stuck at the task and rode out an awful lot of pressure without really allowing more than one or two clear sights of goal, which is an achievement in itself. We'd have all taken 0-0 before kick off and if we can a player or two back available before the next leg we've got an even money chance if progressing.

The idea is to give an overall rating, not rate every attribute.

Rating a goalkeepers offensive performance is just odd. Even more so when you'd knock marks off his solid goalkeeping performance because of it

I gave them an overall mark, he made two bog standard saves I would expect any of our keepers to make - I gave him a 6 overall. Neither keeper had anything of note to do.

Don't know if we set up to defend only, but going forward we were very devoid of creativity. Midfield also seemed missing half the game. That said, defensively we looked our usual solid selves. Well done to those who went

Think we went for a draw and got one, awful game but mission accomplished.

It seems strange that anyone can score Bardsley 5 (i.e. below par) when we kept a clean sheet in Istanbul against a team who have scored in 31 of their last 33 home matches, and after a performance in which he virtually nullified their left winger.

A boo-boy doesn't have to literally boo. A boo-boy is someone that actively seeks reasons to back up their own bias. Walters could have scored a hat trick tonight and still not rated above 5 with some posters on here.

Defensively good against an average side playing their first competitive game of the season, I expected us to be sharper and get at them for an important away goal. Not a bad result but 1 away goal next week could really leave us in the s**t.

Agreed, I'm not Bardsley's biggest fan but defensively tonight he was superb.

Overall a great result, bring them back to the Turf and it will be a totally different scenario. Dyche masterminded tonight to get a clean sheet and stay in the tie and it’s testament to how much he is growing as a manager every season. Very confident for next Thursday.
