Isn't James Bond supposed to be a codename, and as such not tied to a specific character type? Elba would be a great James Bond

I think 007 is the code name? James Bond has a full backstory written about him in the books. It’s quite specific, and if I’m not wrong, I believe Fleming wrote this in after Connery was cast

I've just read online that James Bond is indeed the person, cleared up in Skyfall apparently.

My mistake, but even still, doesn't matter who plays him in my opinion.

I like Tom Hardy but I've long thought Idris Elba latter would make an excellent James Bond. First came across him in The Wire - think he's a great actor.

And I don't think there really would be much of a difference if the actor was black.

I'm simply saying he is what he is...why change it just for the sake of pacifying a minority, or someone who FEELS like they are part of a minority? Or more importantly, for someone who wants to get upset on the minority's behalf?

If it ends up being Idris Elba (great actor) so be it. It won't seem right to me as Bond is a white character. I'll go to watch it, and i'll judge it based on what it is, and if it's shite, i'll say so. But it wont be shite because of the colour of Elbas skin.

But what makes you think that Elba is being considered for the sake of pacifying a minority? I think that's a ridiculous thing to say. He's being considered because he's currently one of the most popular British actors. The fact that he has black skin is incidental.

I've not read the Bond books but I can't imagine that there's much made about James Bond being white any more than him having dark hair (which Craig doesn't).

Sean Connery was the first to play James Bond; he was tall, dark haired and had a broad Scottish accent. Daniel Craig is relatively short, has blonde hair and a well-spoken English accent. Do these discrepancies in the character bother you?
