Notting Hill Carnival

1 stabbing
30 Police injured
370+ arrests
Police seized knives, a metal pole and a taser.

Can you imagine this being allowed to continue if these figures were in relation to a football match? No? Then why is this annual crime fest allowed to continue?

Imagine it was at an Islamic festival we'd have had a 590 page thread about it.

Yet the Leeds Caribbean Carnival, which attracted over 100,00 people has had no press reports of crimes.

There were 1,299 stabbings in London up to April, or almost 11 per day. One over the course of a two day "crime fest" seems incredibly low.

Can the mods please delete this stupid thread.

Really? It is an annual festival of violence, assaults on Police, sexual assaults, drug dealing, stabbings and the carrying and use of various weapons. I cannot think of any other event in this country that has a record as bad as this one, yet it is allowed to continue year after year.

As I said, imagine if this was a football match/tournament. There would be dawn raids, kettling of fans, restrictions on travel and ticket purchases, exclusion zones in place and lengthy prison sentences for anyone found guilty.

Double standards on display for all to see.

considering around a million people attend it over the weekend, its not quite what i'd call a 'crime fest'.

Uh huh

I'm pretty sure that isn't what it is.

370 arrests from an estimated 1 million attendees, so 37 per 100,000. Compare that to football related arrests where the latest figures show 4 arrests per 100,000 attendees. 9 times more arrests at N Hill than at football matches.

These numbers don't look "incredibly low" to me.

if football had 37 arrests per 100,000 attendees, i'd fully expect football to be allowed to continue.

37 out of 100,000 is definitely a very low number.

So if there were suddenly a nine fold increase in the number of arrests at football matches, you think it would be allowed to continue? You only have to look at the draconian measures in place every time we play the horse botherers to know that this isn't true.

They didn't ban football when it was really, really, really, really bad outside and inside the grounds.

No chance they'd ban it now, whatever happens

Thought it would be a thread about what a good event it was. Been the last 5 years before this weekend, and prior to those years too. Great evemt. Great atmosphere, music, food, people. Get the odd dickhead and the odd arrest. But in all the times I have been I have never once seen so much as a punch thrown - even when there have been much higher arrest figures.

Any trouble that does occur is usually away from the public eye, using the volume of people there and the number of 'distracted' police as a reason to cause bother.

Great event, probably one of the best in the world.

would football be allowed to continue? yes, absolutely it would.

you're perhaps forgetting that out of those 100,000 people 99,963 behaved themselves*.

*yes i know arrests don't tell the full story.

Considering a football attendee attends for two hours and a carnival attendee attends for up to two days...these stats are far closer than you are making out.

What you’ve done there happens thousands of times a day on here and is worse than actual racism. You should be ashamed of yourself - you’re basically Hitler.

Been a few times and most arrests are usually for drunkenness, pickpockets, other forms of street robbery and folk stoned and incapable. People there who are unaffected by these isolated incidents usually have a great time. It isn’t compulsory to attend. I seem to remember having similar problems re ‘drink and drugs’ until police adopted a different method of policing the event. Completely different I know but statistics can be very misleading. If 1 million go each year I think it would be fair to consider the event a success.

Maybe we should close down the London Underground due to the crime figures there and while we are at it let’s close down Oxford Street. Too much crime in many places.

Far as I can see crime and violence was a fair bit down on previous years, but when you take into account the literally massive police "pre carnival" opperation along with over 13,000 old bill (the biggest ever) deployed, add in the banks of metal detectors and "knife arches" which are supposedly "airport grade",100's of cctv cameras, section 60 stop and search coupled with VERY tolerant policing to very low level stuff,i'd say is about "what you'd expect" in regard to arrests.

The second largest carnival in the world, apparently. Barrowford's still the biggest.
