Assuming JBG is injured and if Vydra played well for the U23s I would play 4-4-2 with Hendrick left midfield and Vydra inside left slightly deeper than Barnes.

Like the look of that Spice. Just unconvinced on Wood as a lone striker.

Alongside Barnes he is a different animal!

I think SD will have to go for it and be good to see Vydra and even better if we could provide some service for Lennon , when a player like him gets in the groove he can be unplayable and this could be just the game he needs .Hes a player who can really get the crowd on their feet and just needs things to run for him I think

Just imagine Vydra plays and has a huge impact. What a confidence boost this will be for us all.

I like the formation, but I'm not fully convinced about putting Lennon on Podence. Hendrick has arguably been our best player in the last couple of matches so I would look to include him in the mix. Possibly instead of Westwood or in one of the forward three slots.

Doesn't really matter who comes in, but we need a good performance from them.

With no JBG, we are seriously lacking in a good set piece taker and crossers of the ball.

based on that you want Lowton to start, but it will be Bardsley

That's the line that says it all for me

My theory, and obviously that's all it is, is that because of the impending Europa League games that we were a little less intense on pre season training and also in the friendlies both with selection and intensity of play but then we also didn't play chunks of the first team, especially the defence in it's entirety, in those Europa games.
When you also add in a new keeper not getting time playing behind that defence as well as the defence not getting time together or with Hart, then it possibly could be a factor in the defence seeming having a lack of cohesion and explain their tentative reactions to pace and leg weariness late on in games.
Like I said it's just my theory and if we'd played a full strength team, as I would have, in every competitive game we could be out of the Europa and have zero points in the Prem and 5 more injuries.
My theory though says the defence at very least would be more versed in its skill set with greater confidence and more match fit.

Just as SD has carefully phased Vydra through U23 games he will carefully phase him into the first team squad and then the team on the pitch.
Putting him on from the start when we're a little in the doldrums and expecting him to be our saviour immediately will lead to him being written off, and people tutting on mass, by the 37th minute of his debut.

Oh for the likes of Norman hunter tommy smith Bryan o Neil big Dave mc Kay Andy Lochead would be my team talk....now go kick the Sh!t out of em!!

I agree, but if you listen to the rumours everyone that matters wants out of the competition?
Although an interesting point put to me by AN other was that the players that got us to Europe aren't getting the chance, which may be there only chance, to play in it. Possibly that could cause resentment. If it was so I do think whether there's a bigger picture or not, morally they deserve it, whether they've a right or not.

I wouldn't be starting Vydra even if he is fit. I'd be starting him from the bench to let him earn his place in the starting 11. But he'd get a decent half an hour, depending on how the game is going. Bardsley hasn't done badly in the European games, so I'd start him again.

Would like to see vdyra start on the right with Lennon switching sides, both cutting in to support Barnes. Lennons had little joy going on the outside and our most dangerous balls in the box come from lowts. Taylor has the same ability from left fb.

We HAVE got play our best defence as conceding would pretty much send us out and on current form Lennon and Wood should be nowhere near starting.

Do EVERYTHING possible to get through this match with a win and then bother about stuff like serious squad rotation etc if you're playing regularly in the group stages.

Team more or less picks itself we are so thin. Other than the back four we are playing straight picks - out wide we are forced to square pegs in round holes.

Fwiw i would make sure Lowton and Mee get a run out in Europe so Lowton Tarks Mee Ward at the back.

Lennon Cork and Westwood more or less pick themselves (unless we push Jeff alongside one of the other CMs

That leaves Barnes Jeff and Wood to start either in 4411 or 442 (with Jeff out wide)

If you play Jeff as CM then i would have to push Taylor or Barnes out wide.

Hopefully Vydra will be on thw bench. Would be amazed if he starts.

IMO he's a better lone front man than Wood.
Barnes did a pretty good job supporting from the left a couple of seasons back.

Mmm. Wood has been off it so far rhis seaaon but i'm not convinced. Wood can press from the front much better than Sam who doesnt have the mobility.

If we play Sam up top alone its going to be largely a direct hit the big man game.

Agreed, I'd go back to that until we can get a team out there who are good enough to "out-football" the opposition.
