Vokes

Been a loyal servant for Burnley but time moves on and tonight proved why the summer needed to be about an overhaul of the team with no room for sentiment. Not clinical enough and not enough pace for the highest level.

With a heavy heart, it is time to move on.

Not going to replace him this season. Still more to come from the big lad. Other far more expensive strikers have missed similar.

No. No he wouldnt. Maybe one on another day but he misses those kind of chances fairly regularly.

Then he'll score 2 or 3 cracjers tbat are harder.

Thinf is do we think if say Jayrod had had tjose chances we would have won?

Encouraging aspect is Sam is getting in the right areas just needs a goal to get him up and running, bad miss in the 1st half admittedly,in the 2nd half he was unlucky with the effort that struck the post, summed up our night.

You win some you lose some. Firstly he got into the position to miss them. Thats half the battle. Secondly due to his stop start appearences theres always more pressure on him to impress when he does start.

Hes a key player. Who is priceless to a team like us. Plays a huge part overall. Has been one of our hardest working, best serving players in years. Deserves our respect and support.

On another night he would have had 3. Played well but for the first header. Possibly the second too.

I thought Vokes and Barnes were better than Wood and Vydra tonight.

I’ve always been a fan. I just think to move on quality wise he doesn’t have a role for us. He hasn’t improved and is pushing 30.

You just need to see his interview after the game. Looked like he’d gone 10 rounds with Anthony Joshua. Top bloke and top professional who gives everything he has.

He missed one sitter tonight and it’s time to get rid. Ridiculous.

Always gives you something particularly from the bench. He could have scored against Watford immediately after coming on and also against Fulham. It’s fine margins but he could be sat on half a dozen goals already this season.

And yet Vydra stuck it in the net. Vokes was decent but he missed some very good chances (which is generally what he does at this level.

I like Sam, dont get me wrong. But tonight he should have had at least 1. If that had been Benteke people woukd be queuing up to take the ****

A lot of 'could haves' and 'should haves' regarding Sam Vokes. Could have had 3or 4,should have had at least one. Ended up with none and won't add to that at the weekend as he probably sits out most of another game. It's not as though we are blessed with a plethora of goalscorers.

Unplayable tonight, everything Chris Wood should be when it comes to winning headers. If he could finish like Ronaldo he wouldn't have ever played for us. At the risk of causing anarchy I'd get rid of Wood long before I got rid of Sam

That's why no other club bought him. Happy to keep him at Burnley, but which other Pl teams would he get into? Cardiff?

Neither look like they are going to score goals even on a remotely regular basis. Barnes blows hot and cold and as a consequence there is more and more pressure on the defensive side of the team to keep us in games. It hasn't gone well so far, obviously but it is concerning where the goals are going to come from.

Agree Sam should have bagged, but he cost a fraction of Benteke's fees and wages,it's easy to say Wood would have buried those chances, maybe but he may not have put himself in the position to create the chances in the first place.

For what it is worth, imo his best season was upfront in the first promotion season with Ings. After his injury he lost more mobility and in Premier League terms just cannot get around the park or react quickly enough. What keeps him somewhat in business is an above average aerial threat but that too is often negated depending on who he is up against.

It doesn't really matter who would or would not buy him, he's our player and he worked his guts out up there with Ashley Barnes.
The ball came off Wood and Vydra much easier for Olymiacos to start moving forward than it ever did when Sam and Ash were on.

Newcastles main striker Rondon. Exact same age. Never scored 10 prem goals in a season. Vokes has.

Bournemouth Callum wilson. See Rondon.

Palace. Benteke. Exact same age. Awful player these days. Offers zero.

I disagree. Clinical?????? One some chances, we really should have scored, in fact about 5. I wasn't sure about the massive Galipolli manufactured scarf waving about on the telly in Olympaicos colours. A relative was there, in 1915, I think the year was.

Nevertheless, Vokes clip on to the post was as good as any player on Earth, more or less. Only a milimetres stopped it from going in. We would have won otherwise.

Messi might have given it more pace and that might have worked, but Vokes had no time and space to justify such a clever shot ordinarily.

I'm not blaming Sam for tonight.

His first header should probably go on target but he gets too clean a head on it. The second one is at an awkward height for the big fella.

He played well tonight, but he's not our best centre forward,

Rondon and Wilson do more than score goals. They pull defenders around. SM doeant although his hold up and layoff play is decent.

The bottom line though is that thw kind of chances missed tonoght happen regularly.

For all the talk about Wood being poor so far he is still our best striker- he is more mobile, pulls defenders out of positipn and makes runs in behind more often than Sam. In fact he might have had a chance tonight had his great run not been flagged for offside (i thought he had checked before he started so was on not offside)

Still plenty to offer.

A certain poster from the Fylde Coast (I won't name him in case he reports me) will be along soon to claim that Sam clearly missed those chances on purpose last night as an act of revenge for being hawked around other clubs this summer and it is another sign of clear issues between Dyche and the players.

He was outstanding tonight, he has limitations but I can't remember many lightening centre forwards built like Sam.
Very unlucky hitting the post and Vydra nicking his goal on the line but that's football. The two headers you would expect him to score. The first the cross just curled back slightly so he makes contact with the left side of his head which means too much contact. The 2nd was just a reaction after the flick on.
He brought players into the game all night which Wood fails to do and Barnes was far quite tonight.

Not the game to call for the end of Vokes.

If Wood started today we would be anticipating the group stage draw. Would have scored at least 2 of the Vokes chances that’s for sure.

The only thing he did wrong last night was miss with his 2 headers, on another night they would have gone in and everyone would be marking him 10/10. It's fine margins.
Has no one noticed how many simple goals Salah misses.
The shot that struck the post was sublime and so unlucky. I wad behind it and thought it was heading for the corner flag. It curved and carried on curving. If it had gone in it would have gone down in legend.

Time up for Sam, it should be time up for the OP.

Forget the chances he missed his overall play was superb. In my view he's earnt the right to start on Sunday. I'd love the same two up front but think Dyche will go with one.
