It's September, and Wolves will beat us, their squad is all about pace and passing, something we failed to deal with at Fulham.

I think we should remain calm, drink tea, chill out and wait for the Wolves result to sink in.....then bloody panic!!!

If we don't beat Wolves that will be 11 competitive games without a win in 90 minutes, so when, officially, are we allowed to panic like a herd of impala surrounded by lions? Personally I think, at the moment, we'll be okay but there comes a time when panic and hysteria must be allowed. It's kind of already started with:
Defour is never going to play again.
Mee has lost interest.
Defour has disappeared off the face of the earth.
Why are we playing Hart (?).
Defour has been murdered in Belgium by a jealous husband.
Bardsley is slower than a slow thing on mogadons.
Defour is about to take over the club.

It's not yet time to worry overmuch but given that we haven't exactly had a hard run-in in the league we have to start getting out the pitchforks and flaming torches in readiness.

I do hope this has allayed people's fears somewhat.

The international break is a long time in footballing and training terms. No excuses when we come back, we need to perform.

If Brady, Vydra and Gudmunsson are back at least we’ll have some creativity and threat.

What do they do then, walk up to them smiling gleefully and invite them to a weird dance? Of course they wouldn't surround the whole herd I suppose because that would make the lions a bit thin on the ground, but they might surround one or two. One thing I do know is that the impala don't tend to fight back.
Actually out of interest because of your statement I just looked on You Tube and it shows lions chasing an impala, which seems to be getting away quite easily until it gets ambushed by another lion waiting in the bush IN FRONT of it, looking for all the world like they had in fact surrounded it.
Perhaps the lions don't think of this as surrounding it but it seems to me that they do.
Actually it got me thinking about a philosophical argument posed by William James:
A squirrel is running around a tree in a certain direction. A man is following the squirrel around the tree in the same direction. Both the squirrel and the man are clearly going around the tree. But is the man going around the squirrel? He must be, since he is going around in a circle, inside of which the squirrel lies. But he must not be, because he is always looking at the squirrel's back. If you go around a squirrel you first see his back, then his side, then his front, and so on, but at various points the man is North, South, East and West of it, so in fact he must be going around it.....mustn't he? But again he hasn't seen all sides of it. Mmm - a conundrum indeed.

That's an interesting stat and one that I suppose should be cause for some concern. Just done a quick calculation based on the last 32 games results (5 wins and 14 draws) and worked it out as a return on 38 games as points per game and the result is 34.4 points. That is relegation form and there is no getting away from that as it is based on actual results on 90 minutes, sheer hard facts, no supposition. Obviously there are some mitigating circumstances such as the absence of Defour and Brady, the often absent JBG and so on but these happen anyway. Without sounding too pessimistic (I wish I hadn't done the sums now) it seems something has to be done because that set of results shows what we already knew I think, that the reason we finished where we did last season was down to two things - our form in the 1st half of the season (with Defour and Brady granted) and the complete inability on the part of others (notably Everton and Leicester) to capitalise on our loss of form in the second half. To be fair we stacked up a fair number of draws over that period and are undefeated in more games than we lost so all is not bleak.
However guys we must be mindful of the fact that, whatever way you paint it, going back into last season we haven't won a game in 90 minutes in the last 15 attempts.

It can’t be denied that our form is poor, stretching back into last season. The not won in 90 minutes stat is very misleading though as we didn’t need to win 5 of those 32 games in 90 minutes. We did the job required against both Aberdeen and Istanbul - although adding those games into the equation paints a more damning picture which is obviously the intent.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that we had as good as achieved our target with a few games to spare last season, and it’s a well know phenomenon that teams drop the work rate and intensity by a small degree when they have achieved their goal, whether we like that or not. I doubt very much we’d have rolled over at the Emirates or at home to Bournemouth had we needed a result.

Agree with Rileybobs here - people are pulling out this statistic to suit their own agenda. Not saying you are Houseboy but on the thread that originally quoted this statistic that was definitely the case.

Rather than include games in Europe, end of the season nothing to play for games to make an assessment over a bit of a strange number of 32 games and then extrapolate this up to 38 why don’t we chose the last 4 league games of this season and the 38 games we played last year ?

I reckon that will show us up as pretty decent !

We need to score at wolves because they will definitely get at least one , hope we start with an attacking line then defend our lead like we used to in the good old days!

We look nailed on relegation candidates at its only early September.
We must have the worse Premier league midfield in history

If its so nailed on why don't you agree to give £500 to the Clarets Youth Foundation if we stay up ?

As for your comment on our midfield it does not even warrant a response.

Really? Defour, Cork, Westwood and Hendrick? That’s the best midfield we’ve had in our history so by default it isn’t the worst in Premier Leavue history.

Cardiff probably,Brighton definitely not,Huddersfield will be down there again and one or two others, now our European adventure is over we should be able to adequately prepare for games, and energy levels should improve as a result.

Once we get a win confidence will flourish and we'll climb the table, the important thing is getting that win ASAP.Despite our slow start if we can amass 4 points from these next 2 games we'll probably sit around mid-table with winnable games to follow.

Well I really don't know or care about anybody else, but I'm bloody panicking. I know we're officially not allowed to panic yet, but from what I've seen so far this season and from what my considerable experience watching Burnley over 50 years tells me, I'm definitely panicking. I'm tempted to apologise for it, but actually I'm not doing. I believe it's time.

Panic - no
Concerned - yes

A defence that is leaking goals far more frequently than last season
Whilst I agree with the thought that defending starts from the front, there does appear to be a lack of cohesion between our back 5 than was seen in previous seasons. The main personnel haven't changed but their understanding/togetherness certainly has. We have paid £15m for Gibson (a good deal as far as I can see) so is it time for a change. Ward may have lost some of his pace but Taylor offers nowhere near as much to the team when going forward.

A midfield that woefully short in numbers and differing skillsets
Arfield never replaced. Brady known to still be injured before and during the window yet no cover sought (maybe Clucas, but he was not in the same mould as Robbie)
And the saga of Defour - Like a number on this forum I would not be surprised if he never plays for us again. He reminds me somewhat of Sturridge who always thought he was injured so couldn't/wouldn't play. And why does he seem to insist that any treatment has to be done in Belgium - we pay his wages, I presume we have a good backroom staff, so why don't we take charge of his recovery programme. The club (not Defour) will take the decision at the end of this season as to whether we activate the additional year in his contract - sorry, but if he doesn't seem to be wanting that to happen he is going the right way about getting a new club next year
Add to that a current central midfield duo of Cork and Westwood who are like two peas in a pod with neither having the physical height or strength to really impose themselves on opposing teams

Forwards who are struggling to score goals
No change from last season - 3rd lowest goals scored in the whole of last year and not even averaging a goal per game at home during the same period. Add to that a lack of quality in terms of quickness in feet and mind does not bode any better for this year ( a half fit Vydra would show more pace than any of the other guys but so far given just cameo roles - like Wells and Walters)

The common mantra seems to be "wait till Defour, Brady and JBG are back and everything will change"
Well that scenario doesn't seem to be close to happening soon and no new personnel will be coming in before Jan

So I am not about to panic but am concerned for our current situation in terms of the strength of squad being able to move into a reasonable league position before Jan when we hope, yet again, for a good transfer window in terms of recruitment

The manager has had full control of the squad in terms of positional cover and skills required. Injuries are part of any season and SD can now show us his own skills in making this squad work

Or might I suggest a rope and noose and find somebody to kick the chair away.

I agree with much of what you have said there. To me it's stood out like a sore thumb that we need a gig and string midfielder to complement Cork and or Westwood. You are right about Arfield too.

But you could say that about most teams in the Prem. Aside from Lennon we haven't any pace, nor did we have any last season. As for dealing with it at Fulham we were undone with crosses into the box and a long range effort.
