Re: Shopping at Bob Lord's butcher shops
Where I lived there were 5 Butchers shops within 100 yds. 4 on St. Matthew St. alone on just three terraced blocks with Lords Butchers at the bottom on the junction of Harold Ave. and Coal Clough Lane.
Although young I clearly remember that each had it's own reputation for quality, price, tough meat etc. and Lords was always looked upon as expensive and poor quality and neither us or any neighbours shopped there if it could be avoided. I well remember my Mum and Dad having an argument over some meat one day and declaring that we would never shop there again. I can't say how justified this was being a small child but it's interesting that the other shops were owned by the Butcher who worked there and lived on the premises whilst Lords was a chain and when competition came along was the first to close.

Sounds like an expression to use when you go desperately on the pull at 1:50 in a nightclub.
"I'm going to the bar for another pint then I'm off shopping at Bob Lord's butchers".

Lived in Burnley Lane and we shopped at local butchers on Queen Victoria Road. Remember no one in Burnley Lane would ever shop at Bob Lords, especially after he sold Jimmy Mac.

Remember one on Accy road as a kid . He had a couple of fingers missing.

Sorry Blanty but Harold Avenue had two only junctions in my Stoops Estate days . They were at Rossendale Road and Cog Lane. Even in Bob Lords heyday Stoops had no butchers shop.cblantfanclub wrote:Where I lived there were 5 Butchers shops within 100 yds. 4 on St. Matthew St. alone on just three terraced blocks with Lords Butchers at the bottom on the junction of Harold Ave. and Coal Clough Lane.
