English qualified players getting Premier League game time

Post by tiger76 » Sat Sep 08, 2018 3:44 pm

Despite the successful summer in Russia, there is a ticking time bomb for the English FA to consider,it's no wonder Southgate is contemplating selecting Championship players.I'm not really sure what the FA can do about this though, the top six Chelsea and Man City especially are loathe to give their promising youngsters a run in the first team, hence the large number of players both have out on loan.

The bomb has already gone off mate, a few years ago it happened. I remember a game between Arsenal and Wigan and there weren't one English player on the pitch

Sadly you're probably right,England outperformed expectations in the World Cup,but there is little strength in depth, the form of James Maddison is promising but he's one of few who are shining.

I doubt the Premier League clubs give a toss about the England national side. It doesn't matter to them if their players are from England, Spain, or Christmas Island.

The issue is the home grown rule for young players.

Fabregas is classed as home grown, despite being Spanish and a Spanish international etc.

Tbf, England were never that good, even before the influx of overseas players. It just meant we had to choose from a bigger pool of mediocre ones.

I can't remember England doing particularly well in the 80's for example.

Potential changes being considered to the homegrown rule, increasing squad numbers to 10 and homegrown players actually having a British Passport instead of just spending 3 years here whilst under 21.

All due to Brexit, so every cloud.
