Maybe they should make a law that says meteorologists aren't allowed to use up-to-date science to warn people about hurricanes. Then this hurricane wouldn't happen.

Anyway, category 4 right now. Will weaken as it hits but is expected to stick around for a couple of days reminding the Carolinas that warmer air can hold more water which it can then dump on you.

It is much further north than Florida, i'm just poking fun at FCB. He know's why.

It's unusual for the east coast of the US to have a storm this large hit it, but it does happen every so often. It's being compared to Hugo that hit the same area in 1989.

Winds are bad, storm surge much worse if your costal and in long run storms that hang around and dump are the worst in terms of damage caused to number of people. My prayers are with those in the path.

Not sure a life threatening hurricane is something to make fun of but each to their own. Personally I wish everybody in North and South Carolina and Virginia all the best. When you have a mandatory evacuation it is usually extremely dangerous. Stay safe everybody

I have a question. Obviously this woman is incredibly stupid, but is there a case to be made here that it's incredibly irresponsible for news organisations to give idiots like this air time and therefore possibly giving other people reason to stay behind instead of evacuating?

I have, I was in Barbados in 1980 - Hurricane Allen Cat 5. I was only 8 at the time and didn't think it was that special apart from it had removed all the sand off the beach and the roads were covered with fallen palm trees that nobody could be arsed to shift.

I'm not sure you know how forecasts work if you were mocking the BBC or the Met Office. I won't speak to Accuweather's accuracy long term but the Met Office is excellent.

The problem now is that everybody is saying "ohhhh it's only a Cat 3 no biggie" but it's moving so slowly that the amount of rain an area will get is going to be maximized and while the wind is less it'll be sustained for a goodly few hours per county, which will still wreck older trees, buildings etc.

Probably peter out as soon as it leaves South Carolina.

One area is looking at a storm surge of over 9 feet. It's insane.
And the people staying behind are being incredibly selfish. When they're in trouble other people are going to have to risk their lives to rescue them, which also means fewer people to rescue other selfish idiots.

haven't logged on for days as some advertising virus thingy kept interrupting on IOS, so now with W10..... I'm in Cary, NC, in the center of the Triangle area, which is the expanded area around Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill.

I have to tell you there's a sense of being cheated here

the authorities did the right thing in reacting quickly, making evacuation decisions for the coast, and warning the big population area of the triangle that the eye of the hurricane was a direct hit. NC is essentially a forest, and any kind of hurricane can be devastating in terms of property damage, but downed power lines, cutting power for days on end to millions. Even now with the shift, they're still predicting one million without power.

But the cheated bit is that we've been preparing. They ran out of gas locally two days ago, there is no bottled water to be had in stores, no batteries, no provisions, no generators, no plywood sheets, nor anything remotely useful as construction to be had anywhere - it's a "The Walking Dead" wasteland as we all hunker down..... and then the bugger headed south.....

this morning I filled up with gas - regular. the super and premium octanes were out of stock because they were bought in lieu of regular, but the regular is now restocked....

WE WANT OUR HURRICANE!

Stay safe NRC. I sat through Irma last year whilst on vacation in Florida, and whilst ultimately everything was fine, it was an unnerving experience to say the least.

Funny that, last time I was in the UK (earlier this year) the BBC got it wrong 50% of the time. My mocking was more for accuweather who get it wrong 90% of the time

That's probably because you're in Vegas (i assume, don't know why) where the weather forecast changes a couple of times a decade and have got used to being able to see the weather predicted 3 weeks in advance.

Also worth mentioning Super Typhoon Mangkhut with 160mph winds about to clip the top of the Philippines before heading towards Hong Kong.

The daytime images from the Japanese are pretty amazing, updates every 10 minutes. Very good resolution when zoomed in.

You obviously don't know the first thing about Vegas if you think the weather stays the same for that length of time. FWIW I've used wunderground everywhere I've travelled in the world and have found that to be the most accurate

We just had the remnants of Gordon go directly overtop of us. Two days of rain, and it dropped the temp from 36C. to 14C. Hurricanes can go anywhere along the eastern seaboard.
