Rovers funding the Lawyers....

Post by Clarets4me » Tue Sep 25, 2018 1:27 am

Reading a couple of things over the last few weeks recovering from a major but routine operation, it struck me that our " friends down the M65 ", and their players ( past & present ), seem to have been keeping the legal profession rather busy over the last few years, here's a quick summary ...

1996 - Simon Garner jailed for a month for " Contempt of Court ", during a messy divorce.

2002 - Garry Flitcroft loses year long battle to keep details of his " Affair " from being published by the " Sunday People ". It costs him over £200k in legal fees.

2007 - February - Bryan Hodge, 19 year old Rovers midfielder on loan at Mansfield, convicted of drink driving . He's over twice the legal limit, and has only had his license back for two months following a previous conviction for the same offense. In August, ex winger Mark Patterson files for bankruptcy.

2008 - June - Future Rovers ace, David Goodwillie is convicted for assault in a Night-Club inn his native Scotland. He's fined £250.

2010 - June - Scottish International Colin Hendry files for bankruptcy, followed closely by Keith Gillespie in October. Both admit problems with alcohol and gambling.

2011 - January - Ex- Rovers keeper, American international Brad Friedel files for bankruptcy following a failed business venture in the USA, whilst in August, current manager Steve Kean is convicted of drink driving, despite his defence that his drinks had been " spiked ". He's fined £1,800 & banned for 18 months.

2012 - April - Future Rovers ace, David Goodwillie is convicted ( again ) for assault in a late night Take-Away Restaurant in his native Scotland. He's sentenced to 12 month's probation and 80 hours Community Service.

2013 - January - Steve Kean settles out of Court, paying former Boss, Sam Allerdyce an estimated £ 200,000 for comments he was recorded making on a pre-season tour about " Big Sam ". In April, former manager Henning Berg wins his Court case to have his contract terms honoured after his sacking after 57 days. He's estimated to have earnt £39,473 for each day he was in charge. Rovers quickly settle with Michael Appleton, Berg's successor, who lasted 67 days, before he can have his day in Court.

2014 - April - Colin Kazim-Richards, on loan to Rovers from Galatasaray the previous season, is convicted under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, for making obscene ( homophobic ) gestures to Brighton fans during a Championship game at the Amex in February 2013. He was fined £750. The following month, Chris Sutton files for bankruptcy, blaming " bad financial advice " and a costly divorce, from his 1st wife in 2005.

2015 - April - Colin Hendry banned from driving for 17 months after being found with nearly double the legal limit of alcohol in his blood and driving " never below 50 mph ", in 20 & 30 mph Speed limit areas. In August, he's convicted again, this time for breaching a restraining order, and " Harrassment ". He's sentanced to 100 hours Community Service. In September, ex-Rovers Defender Dominic Matteo, is revealed to have been made bankrupt in July, having gambled over £1m on Horse-racing including a single bet of £100k on one race.

2016 - May - Former Rovers defender Lucas Neil, capped 96 times for Australia, is made bankrupt following a series of " unwise investments ", in property and race-horses, with certified debts of over £800k to Nat-West , and over £140k to the Royal Bank of Scotland.

2017 - January - Former Rovers ace, David Goodwillie ( 28 games, 2 Goals ) is convicted as a " Rapist ", following a Civil prosecution relating to events in a flat in Edinburgh in January 2011. His contract with Plymouth Argyle is terminated " by mutual agreement " and damages are agreed at £100k at the Court of Session in Edinburgh. He now plays for Clyde in the Scottish 2nd Division.
In February, Anthony Stokes, in the first year of his three year contract, after being let go by Celtic, was ordered by a Dublin Court to pay 232,000 Euro's in compensation to a Car park attendant, who also worked as an Elvis Presley Tribute Artist, after Stokes had assaulted him in Dublin in June 2013. He was released from his contract in the following close season. In November 2012, he was seen attending a wake for a member of the " Real IRA " , who'd been shot in a gangland feud in September that year. He now plays in Iran. In July, ex-captain Barry Ferguson applied for bankruptcy, as did fellow Scottish International, Billy McKinlay in September of the same year.

2018 - August - Former Rovers trainee & current Bury player, Neil Danns, fined £1070 and given 10 points on his license for sleeping at the wheel of his Audi A5 , on a total stranger's drive in Warrington, whilst over the limit. In September, Rover's current Fan's favorite, Bradley Dack, was spared a Jail Sentence, despite breaching his Community Service order on three different occasions, following his Conviction for assaulting a female Police Officer in September 2017. In addition, new signing Jack Rodwell is appealing against his 6 month driving ban, for failing to disclose who was driving his car when a " Speeding " ticket was issued, on the grounds that he'd moved and never received the paperwork. The appeal is due in November. Dwight York's ( Rovers 2002/04 ) bankruptcy petition was adjourned after a hearing in August, and will now be heard on 15th October this year.

There certainly is but when young men have too much time on their hands, too much money and too much testosterone, there's bound to be negative consequences.

Hopefully, we don't have any bad apples and, like you suggest, Sean would keep them under control.

No idea what this has got to do with Sean Dyche's no D******d policy when you're naming players from 1990's and the 2000's.

Our 90's players and managers were hardly averse to needing lawyers.....

Strange thread indeed. Quite sad really. All clubs and other large workplaces have their fair share I'm sure

Bizzare thread and considering we have Jeff Hendrick who has recently been involved in a court case and signed Joey Barton twice I'm not really sure what the point is. Without any research I bet we could match that list if we looked at the lives of all our current and ex players from the same period.

Didn't Jamie Hoyland once get done for DUI?
