John Terry to be his assistant.
Interesting choice, potential to be a good one.
Disappointed this didn't happen though.

He did pretty well at Brentford and if he gets backing from the board maybe a good bet to go up.

Bold choice from Villa, makes a change from the normal merry-go-round,if i was a Brentford fan i'd brace myself for a January raid for Neal Maupay and Ollie Watkins.

Brentford fans must be sick of being pillaged...they've doing quite well for a few years now and keep having the rug pulled from under them!

You have to feel for the Brentford fans - best players and now their manager nicked.

I find myself having a soft spot for Brentford. I dont know if they’ve got a wealty owner but the just seem to get on with it. Always seem to play decent stuff and have pretty good season after season even with players/managers leaving

Didn't Smith distance himself from the job at the weekend?

Yes by about 135 miles, Brentford were away at Leeds.
Think its a good appointment for both him and Villa, could be a manager well worth keeping an eye on.

Wonder if Brentford fans will boo him for leaving for a rival mid season.

Potentially a cracking appointment as he's done a good job at Brentford and they play some lovely stuff.
Be interesting to see how Terry adapts to being a No 2 though.

#Brentford assistant head coach Richard O'Kelly to join new manager Dean Smith at #AstonVilla as his number two, raising questions over John Terry's precise role at Villa Park.

On reading this I got to thinking about the irony. Despite being in the Championship Villa are a genuinely big club who have underperformed for years. 12 months ago it would have been all over the media linking Dyche to this job (even if there were no truth in it) but this time? Not a sausage. Has he suddenly disappeared under the radar, has his 'stock' gone down or is it simply that he now has a full time contract? Just wondered.

The media realise theres not a dog's chance Sean would go near this toxic mess of a club. They signed hasbeens in the Prem and they are still playing serious wages to some. Also wasted £100,000 a week on ageing cb Terry in a gamble to recover their top flight status.
Villa have been in decline for years and its going to take serious cash and effort to halt the slide

I can see this going belly up. He looks a good manager, but I don't think it's a good idea to bring in an assistant with a higher profile than the manager and one I bet he didn't choose. You should always let a new manager choose his assistant.

Oh dear, it's started already.
BBC News reporting how there's a new face in the dugout, that's right, John Terry, who's taken his first managerial role since retiring as a player. He'll be joined by Dean Smith who has left Brentford.
The accompanying video was of Terry holding up the shirt, they didn't even mention that Smith was the Manager. John Terry's Aston Villa folks!

My first thoughts were of the rants about not listening to someone won hasn't done, or won anything at the top level.
Granted it was aimed at Robbie Savage, but wouldn't like to see what happens if the 'do you know who I am?' attitude comes out - or maybe I would
