Pleasantly surprised at Gaga''s acting ability after not being impressed with her American Horror appearance last year. Really powerful performances from the leads.

To be fair anyone having seen the original with Garland/Mason and 70's remake with Streisand/Kristofferson would know it ain't gonna end nicely......

Loved it - possibly even more than Kristofferson/Streisand version. Lady Gaga was way better than I expected and Bradley Cooper is seriously good.

The Garland/ Mason version was itself a remake of the original

Just been to see it.
Based on the reviews online and in the news was expecting the best film of all time.
I thought it was well acted. And some good music. Amd the storyline was good. But something missing for me and the ending even with spoilers was totally predictable. Was also a little exaggerated / unbelievable and everything went a bit quick - from meeting her, to her being on stage to being a world star. Nonsense.
As for a cinema full of crying women - give me a break!
Not a bad film. And you'll be dragged to worse by her indoors. But nowhere near as good as is being made out!

It's not widely known that in early 1974, Striesand and her then partner, Jon Peters approached Elvis Presley with a view to him playing the role eventually taken by Kris Kristofferson... Wikipedia ..
" Streisand and Peters wanted Elvis Presley for the role: they met with Elvis and discussed the film, and he was interested in taking the part, thinking it would revive his film career. Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker, insisted Elvis have top billing and asked for a substantial sum of money for the role, even though he had not had an acting role since 1969, and people were unsure what kind of box office draw he would be. This effectively ended Elvis's involvement with the project. Parker also did not want to have Elvis portrayed as having a show business career in decline. This, in fact, was far from the truth, with Elvis playing to packed auditoriums wherever he toured in the States. "
It might just have been the catalyst to shake Elvis out of his " Touring " rut, shortly after his Divorce. Ironically, the film cost $6m to make ( $25.8m in todays money ) and grossed $80m Worldwide ( a modern $344.1m ). In addition, the soundtrack Album sold 15m copies Worldwide, and that's before merchandising, Video rights etc. Parker's demand's would have been easily affordable ....
I'll ask Elvis about it, next time I'm in Kalamazoo, Michigen where he still lives under the " Witness Protection Programme " !!

Thanks for the reviews guys. My wife has been going on about seeing this and I wasn't sure (another remake of a classic film doesn't normally fill me with enthusiasm) but I think maybe the old Meerkat Movies might just get some use on this. I am actually quite a fan of Gaga anyway so it sounds a winner.

Yeah hadn't known that and looked it up....
The original was not a musical...
Found it has Frederic March and Janet Gaynor in it and made in 1937...
