Sent off three times in a season

Have we ever had a player sent off three times in one season?

I can think of a few who have gone twice - Wayne Thomas (twice), Joey Gudjonsson, Kyle Lafferty, Steven Caldwell, Clarke Carlisle and Mark Monington was once sent off twice in a week. But have any of our players been sent off three times in one season?

I caught some highlights on SSN and thought I heard someone sent off for the third time this season already. Possibly in the Sunderland game.

Edit - just done a quick search, it was Max Power. Getting sent off three times by the end of November is some effort!

Didn't know it was 3 in 5. That is pretty special.

Ade Akinbye sent off within 5 minutes of coming on lol that was a belter .... My good friend David went for a pee as the substitution was made and came back as Ade was walking to the Tunnel...

Not even John Deary? I remember him getting sent off v Aldershot for chinning one of their players who was swinging on his shirt tails and getting a 5 match ban. Back in the days when you needed to commit GBH to get a yellow card, that took some doing.

I’m sure Gerry Harrison did it one season under Mullen.

Best red card I've seen, right in front of the Longside.

Against Rochdale in the FA Cup?

Think it ended up 10 v 9.

Sure it was Rochdale, yeah. One of theirs had just chopped down Super Jonny Francis. Some old-school retaliation from Monington.

Gerry Harrison v Southend was worth a double red card. 2 footed tackle and then chinned their centre half who came over to remonstrate with him.

We were still only at 0-1 when that happened so probably a lot funnier for our visitors that day.

Bally's gonna get yer.....

I have a memory of a certain Peter Swan almost decapitating a (if memory serves) Milwall player who had been giving our lads some hammer.... the ref and lino hadn't seen it, and Swanny just strolled back up the pitch to take up position in defence grinning to all in the James Hargreaves ....
This might be a false memory but am sure it happened.
:D :D :D

He was sent off at York in an FA Cup replay on the Tuesday and then against Rochdale in the next round on the following Saturday.

Sean Dyche has a similar attitude to the FA Cup.

Very true.
Dunn played Ball like a flute that day and got what he wanted.

I have a vague memory of Alan Stevenson kicking an opposition player up the arse. My personal favourite (although the memory may be cheating as it must be nearly 40 years ago).

Sunderland player Max Power's 3rd red card this season was rescinded on appeal today - Sunderland Echo.

Just trying to think who was the first Burnley player I saw sent off. My first game attended was in late 1958, still a few months short of my 7th birthday so I have vague recollections of anything as serious as a sending off occuring. As the 60's gathered momentum I'm still not convinced I witnessed a Claret dismissal until that of Willie Morgan on New Year's Day at Ewood Park in 1966. Perhaps the older posters can help here because surely we had players sent off between 1958 and 1966 didn't we?

Colin Blant and David Merrington would be sent off every game if they'd played these days ;)

Stevenson's red against Blackpool was 80/81 think we won 4-1 but thought Brian Laws went in goal ..
He got his marching orders against Leicester a couple of season's later so possibly Laws went in that time ..
Marlon had a few reds also but don't think anyone has amassed 3 in a season ..

From 1945 to 1964, we only had one player sent off, and that was Billy Elliott for his famous "look of intent" in March 52. See link.

I think that's not correct as I remember being at a game where Johnny Giles and Gordon Harris were both sent off for fighting which was a very unusual event back in those days. Giles was playing for Manchester United at the time and he left United for Dirty Leeds in 1963 where Don obviously spotted his penchant for gratuitous violence.

I've been watching the Clarets since 1961 and in 1966 I made my first visit to 'Deadwood' and remember Willie Morgan being sent off and is my earliest memory of a Burnley player being sent-off. The match was played New Years Day and the Clarets won the match 2-0 with goals from Wilie Irvine & Bomber Harris. In the Clarets team that day were my two all time favourite players Ralph Coates & Brian O'Neil. Happy Days!

I can't recall anyone being sent off 3 times like that. We had a couple sent off against Hull away a few years back, I don't remember many red cards in general tbf. I remember Rasiak from Derby getting someone sent at the turf a long time ago, I seem to remember a very hostile atmosphere that day.

Akinbiyi's was the best red card I've seen for us. After I saw him do that I knew he would be good for us, he just brought with him a power and threat that he seemed to instantly establish with that red card.

1-4 in relegation year. Stevenson must have slid 20yds on the mud but clearly took out the Leicester forward. A pen, no doubt, but a sensible ref, it was Tyson, would have taken conditions into consideration and left him on. Laws went in nets first but I’ve a vague memory that Paul McGee went in later on.
In Tysons favour it was the season they went mad for “denying a goal scoring opportunity”.

I’m over for Liverpool. I’ll fb you and try and get together.
