Southampton have named ex-RB Leipzig manager Ralph Hasenhuttl as their new boss on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The Saints sacked Mark Hughes on Monday, eight months after taking charge, with the club 18th in the Premier League table.

Austrian Hasenhuttl, 51, has been out of work since leaving Leipzig in May, ending a two-year spell at the club.

"As soon as we met, Ralph's enthusiasm for football was contagious," said Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger.

"His hunger to take on a new and challenging job in the Premier League was evident. In our discussions, he quickly aligned himself with the values and the vision of the club."

EDIT - Too many Ralphs... :D

Seems a good appointment on paper considering their position is as precarious as ours. They clearly have some talented players who are massively underperforming so a great opportunity for the right manager. At least we were spared the links to Sean that would have come had Hughes been pushed in the summer....

Also another case of careful what you wish for. They wanted Puel out. (As did Leicester.) Who did a very good job, especially when you compare him to Pellegrino at Saints and Shakespeare at Leicester.
