Genuine question, is it no longer ok for people to refer to the gender of the person? I’ve see the uproar today around the stupid woman comment.
The comment is clearly bad taste however I would of expected issue to be taken with the word stupid yet everything I read is in relation to the word woman

Perhaps the Right Honourable Minister for Islington North should learn to keep his mouth shut and then stop lying about what he really said?

If you refer to gender while being derogatory, it becomes a sexist comment. Just as referring to race while insulting someone makes it a racist comment. Corbyn was quite happy to admit he used the word "stupid", because calling someone a stupid person is quite acceptable; calling someone a stupid man, probably acceptable; calling someone a stupid woman, apparently not.
I bet if that Chelsea yobbo had directed his foul abuse at Sterling without using the word "black", we wouldn't have heard a dicky bird about it. Using gender or race terms really escalates the issue.

In the same way as the pc crowd have a do at anybody using a derogatory adjective followed by a nationality. As though you are having a pop at the entire nation instead of the person.

Just because something is a sexism issue doesn't mean it's a #metoo issue, and by trying to treat everything as if it is you diminish the actual movement.
Your attitude is little different to people who see black people protesting about something/anything and calling it a BLM march.

It’s a really interesting one this. I agree that the word ‘stupid’, which is subjective in this instance, would be expected to be the more controversial. Yet it is the word ‘woman’, which is objective and factually correct, that appears to be causing the controversy. Bizarre.

I'm afraid mate that a cross section of females (I have just spoken to a number of women in the office) says you are wrong. Not one (not even one) said that if they had done something stupid would be offended at being called a 'a stupid woman'. They would not hesitate to call a man a stupid man in similar circumstances and think that it should work both ways. Political correctness, unfortunately, doesn't take into account common sense or humour. This is the problem that most people have with PC, it has a complete lack of context and there is no give or take. It tries to force everone into a procrustean bed of sameness which most people do not want. I used to have a Asian friend at work a few years ago and we used to trade insults based on race with good humour and fun, neither of us took offence at the other and we were good mates. One day one of the people in the office (a woman dare I say) pulled me up for using a racist term to my mate, to which I said 'He doesn't mind so why should you, take it up with him'. People should stop taking offence and bloody grow up. There is a difference between an alledged racist comment that is meant as an insult and one that is made in fun with no harm intended and if some people can't see this it says more about them than it does about the person saying it.

I get it, I really do. Some of the names I call my friends would sound awful out of context (especially against the gay / minority ones).
I mean more in general. If I call a random woman (say, a motorist who pulled out on me) a "stupid woman" rather than just plain "stupid" it's fair to assume the woman bit is meant to strengthen the insult.

I take your point but the emphasis on woman could, for many people mean no more than she is A. stupid and B. a woman. In the context of the situation BOTH terms would be true and therefore no offence should be taken. For what it's worth I hear far more often these days women using the add-on 'man' after an insult or rebuke than the other way around. It's just words and for me the old sticks and stones argument is still valid. Similarly using an insult/rebuke followed by a reference to race to an individual is simply a statement of fact about the individual not a mass insult to a whole race or nation.
As I have stated on here and in other places many times I am an anti-racist egalitarian by nature, anyone who knows me knows this, but I am a hater of political correctness because it has become a massive tool to ban that other passion of mine, freedom of speech and expression.
Chairman/chairwoman/chairperson/chair? The last reduces someone to an inanimate object and is actually the greatest 'insult' of the four. Political correctness these days says the last is correct, how can that possibly be?
I rest my case.

That would be loved, accepted, wrapped in a massive bow and given as a present. I think you have hit the proverbial well on the head. The objective term is in dispute because it was preceded by an insult but the same objective term would be fully 'acceptable' if it is preceded by something more praiseworthy. It seems that there is a certain amount of selectivity going on here.

Is it now an offence to use the word n-i-g-g-e-r even when discussing it with regard to it's intended meaning. I use the hyphens assuming it wouldn't even make it onto the page if I didn't. If you you used 'n' for the same reason please forgive me.
