For anyone thinking of a new hobby, try looking up the history of your family, this is the time of year to start, given the dark nights and miserable weather.
The first step is to join a Family Tree records company. You're going to see and find some very interesting connections and facts when accessing the Census and Church records.
It's a lot of detective work and your present surname will probably have changed over time i.e. someone called Banks would have been spelt Bancks 200 years ago.
My direct descendents go back to the 1500s. The earliest family records go back into the 1300s and land given to some of the family, which now form the towns of Quadring and Ireby in Lincolnshire.
I dreaded finding I had descendants from Blackburn, but fortunately for me, thats not the case.

We have 3 family trees

I planted a Betula Pendula (both our cats ended up under this tree when they passed away, as it was their fave spot in the garden)...
The Mrs planted an Amanogawa (columnar flowering cherry)...
And an Oak planted as a little one from my Step Daughters garden in Woking.....

One of our lines changed in three successive generations. From Tonnery to Tondry to Tondra.
I could only put it down to the scrawlie handwriting of the era, this was mid to late 19c.

pb, in those days most people couldn't read and write, so when giving their surname the Census recorder wrote down what he thought was correct.

I haven't bothered. There's that many pricks in my family I'm thinking my family tree must be a cactus.

My Dad was adopted when he was born, down in Cornwall. In those days, if you were adopted you were sent miles away and so he was sent to live in Burnley with his new adopted parents.

My sister decided to try and see if she could find his mum, as people had tried years before with no success. Long story short, she managed to find her by doing the family tree of what she knew, going off his biological mum's maiden name etc and piecing things together. She used one of the online services but forget which one. His mum was now living in Lowestoft, Norfolk.

We went over to see her and several other family members, months before she died. I think it always played on his mind, on why he was adopted, but he finally got to meet her after around 60 years of not knowing who she was.

I knew my mum and dad and three of my grandparents (one died four years before I was born). I don't wish to delve any further than that to be honest.

Let's be Factual here Frank. Lowestoft is in Suffolk

You're right. It must have been the article I read a few years ago about Lowestoft possibly being readdressed as Norfolk. There were planned protest marches.
