Former Liverpool winger Peter Thompson has died, aged 76.
I remember this man tormenting the Burnley defence in 1969. Brilliant winger.

Very sad. A classic, old -fashioned left winger.

A very good winger, along with Ian Callaghan roasted many a fullback at TM.

..as has been said, an old fashioned Left Winger. He once said he had no time for tactics, just ran with the ball to the by-line and crossed it. He was very effective. Bill Shankly once said something along the lines of: " this is how we're going to play boys......Peter - you may as well go as you never bloody listen anyway !"

RIP Peter.
He did one of the best pieces of skill I’ve ever seen. Playing at Roker Park for Liverpool he brought a ball down on the top of his foot and without it touching the ground he flicked it over his own head and the incoming defender, spun around him and volleyed it just over the bar. If it had gone in you’d be watching it forever. Class act.

Outstanding winger and I can recall his performance against us in October 1968 when we had Jim Thomson making his debut at right-back. I'm surprised Jim ever recovered. Liverpool won 4-0 and we made wholesale changes for the next game against West Ham and went on to win the next eight games.
Sad news.

Ian Callaghan on one wing and Peter Thompson on the other those were the days, most teams teams would always feature at least one specialist winger in their team.
Thompson and Callaghan were among the best pair in the 60's. The day of the wingman largely got less and less after England won the World Cup with Ramsey's "Wingless Wonders" as they were labeled.

As my Dad was a Bolton Wanderers fan we used to go to Burnden Park in the early 1970s so I remember him playing for them. As described he very much hugged the touchline, which was a dangerous place to be if the full-back ever caught up with him given the substantial sudden drop off to track surrounding the pitch. In my very hazy memory they rarely did. Sadly FatSam Allardyce was also in the team (along with the far more classy Paul Jones).

Oddly enough I was only thinking of him on Boxing Day (after our 5-1 defeat), remembering him tearing us apart in Liverpool's 5-1 win here on Boxing Day 1969. He absolutely ran us ragged. Great old-fashioned winger.

Strange the things you remember about players but for me Peter Thompson always wore a long sleeved shirt pushed up to his elbows in a very workmanlike style.
Edit: copied a few years later by another Liverpool winger, Steve Heighway

I remember Liverpool coming up from Div 2. with a strong team. Shankly then signed Thompson from Preston which spelled the end for wingers Alan A'Court and sometimes Kevin Lewis - 2 of my faves.
Thompson could be devastating.
RIP

'Kevin Lewis'
scored against us for Liverpool in the 1-1 draw at Turf Moor during the dreadful winter of 1963 in 4 the round of FA Cup in front of just less than 50,000 spectators. The noisiest football match I've ever attended by far.

I remember Liverpool beating us 0-4 on the Turf, it was Alun Evans debut (he was a record signing at the time) and Peter Thompson was irresistible.
An incredibly speedy and talented winger
RIP Peter Thompson.
