Sam has said: "“Burnley was a huge part of my life, I really found my home there and I made a lot of good friends there, but it was time for me to move on."

Clearly the right decision to let him go. He wanted to go and, given the service he's given us, it is absolutely right that we let him move on.

He also said "a manager I want to play for". Maybe reading a bit too much into it but the amount of interviews of departed players who come out with comments like this is astounding.

Also true legend. Always be a hero. Would have just preferred him going than someone coming in on a 6 month contract though at 38

Players always say things like that and big the new club up. They don't always speak quite so fondly of the club they've left. Sam has.

My favourite modern claret. Came from being a bit of a meh signing to being a big part of the reason we are where we are. Never caused issues, even if he agitated for a move this window you didn't hear it from him.

QPR, Liverpool, Chelsea. Will always be a claret as far as I'm concerned.

Has been a great servant to the club. Clearly wants minutes on the pitch at this stage of his career and due to our recent success, which he has played a huge part in, we are unable to offer that. I wish him all the best.

After his maturity and growth with us as a player, and being 29 now, he should be in his prime and I'd expect him to do really well in the Championship, provided he has the right supply. Good luck Sam

Like Arfield, Sam is a modern day Legend. He has been an integral part of the most successful and sustained period of growth I’ve seen at the Club in my lifetime. I’m truly sad to see him leave.

Thanks for all those great memories, Sam.

Vokesy has always been one to knock on the manager's door if he isn't playing, so this doesn't surprise me.

A bloke who got Burnley and its fans just like SD.

It's a loss and i hope he does well as he's a top pro.

Modern day legend, what a superb signing he has been for us.

Looked a fish out of water in that first full season with us, but from the moment Austin left till today he has been simply brilliant. I particularly think he deserves immense credit for how well he came back from his injury, if anything better (for me) than he was prior. His partnerships with Ings and Gray will leave long in the memory.

All the best Sam - sickened with our business today and would have begged you to stay personally if we knew what was happening with your ‘replacement’, but equally it is hard to begrudge you happiness after the service you have given us.

Welcome back at Turf Moor anytime.

Yeah, I bet he’s spent night after night dreaming of playing for the bloke who upto a fortnight ago was managing ******* Luton.

As for Vokes - well he didn’t turn out too badly after being called “the White Iwelumo” by some pillocks.

There was always a day when he would leave and I think most thought it would be because we’d moved on and signed a far better player to replace him rather than be replaced by Peter Crouch.

A model proffesional and just a very nice person. A void that won't be easy to fill.

Seems a genuinely nice guy. Maybe too nice for a big centre forward like he is, but he knows how to score a header. I genuinely think we could have built a less direct team around him, but crossed it more, rather than cutting in, and he'd have thrived in the top division.

Sorry to see him go, but it was probably the right move for him. Been massive for us in his time here and has scored goals that will live long in the memory. Also impressed with the way he dealt with missing virtually the whole of the first Dyche Premier League season and came back so well the season after.

So when we try to sign an unhappy player it doesn’t happen, but we can’t keep one and persuade him to stay bearing in mind he signed a new contract not that long ago , doesn’t make sense .

Sam has been a great servent to us.

Last year he was a star in the game at Chelsea then after the next home game he was dropped.

Similar story this year and so it was inevitable that an international striker would need more game time.

Best wishes Sam and thanks for the many important contributions you have made in terms of both goals and defending corners....

At a guess, signing a new contract bumps his transfer fee up.

Of course, that could just be the old cynic in me ;)

There's a saying 'nothing last's forever'. However, when Sam signed a new 3 year contract recently I thought he would go on to finish his playing days with us. It's a sad day in our household. My wife's upset. My grandkids, who Sam kindly did a personal video (without any asking) when they came over from Asia last year are 'in bits'. Sam also came to the rescue when my son couldn't get a ticket for Olympiakos in Athens. Sam, Sincere thanks for the personal touches, your a legend and You'll always be a Claret.

Fantastic club servant and quality goalscorer.
As mentioned above his promotion goal against QPR, his thunderbolt against Liverpool and his two at Chelsea stand out but he added to that with the equaliser at Aberdeen for our first goal in Europe since ‘67.
Thanks, Sam.

One of my favourite modern players. The only time I’ve ever jumped out of my chair and cheered a goal by a country other than England was when he scored that fantastic header for Wales against Belgium in the Euros.

It took me the best part of 40 years as a Claret to see a Burnley player score in such illustrious international company. It was the first time my little boy had seen football on the telly; it took Sam less than one.

Good luck Vokesy, and thanks for everything.

Sam truly is a modern day legend. He has been a huge part of everything positive that the club has done the last 6 years and I hope he continues to be successful. The way he’s performed on the pitch and conducted himself off it, means Sam will always be one of us and fondly thought of. Some of his goals were huge but that equaliser at Pittodrie is my favourite.

I had no issue with this being his time to move, he’s certainly earnt the right and understand Dyche getting Crouch in as a body. But for the whole transfer committee/board to leave us weaker than before is to me unacceptable. I don’t want us to go down, for Dyche, the players and the fans, but a little bit of me (just being over emotional) can’t help but feel the board themselves deserve it.
