Certainly stands out in a crowd.

Looks a bit camp but very astute bloke.

He’s certainly polished up his public image since the world and his wife had such a good laugh watching him unseated back in 1997. He almost comes across as an actual human being, these days.

Enjoy his train travel series, always very interesting. He's been all over really. Some great episodes around Europe, India and also the US.

Enjoy his railway progs and he comes across sound whenever he’s on This Week but I still can’t get past him crying when Thatcher was given the boot.

The Clarion has played a great part in the history of the Independent Labour Party and given the correct factual date this was was the real founding of what became the Labour Party. The strength of the representation for the working class was very significant, unfortunately that heritage has dwindled over the years but locally it still bears the hallmarks of social concern for the welfare of the working class.

Uses the same tailor of Henry Blofield (hence the colours)

I met Michael Portillo a few years ago.,he visited our school,.. a guest invited by the Economics and Politics society.

I had lunch with him and the Headmaster, a couple of teachers and four students from the 6th form. He was very confident and chatty over lunch, and I was beginning to re-evaluate my opinion of him. He was pretty right-wing and hard line back then.

He did a 25 minute talk to the students and then a Q&A session with the 6th form. He went down well and he got a very positive reception.

As the students were leaving I was chatting with MP and the Head - I asked him what was the biggest regret he had in Politics; he answered 'none whatsoever'.

That was surprising as he had competed for leadership of the Tory Party in 2001, and finished third to Iain Duncan Smith and Kenneth Clarke.

I enjoyed the section on 'the Clarion' tonight, he has a flair for TV.

That is their knack. I was down in parliament for a meeting over a strike, after the meeting we ended up in the strangers bar and I got chatting with Nigel Evans, a guy who I couldn’t be further from politically. He was a charmer and you soon forgot he is a right wing loon.

I think he makes good telly programmes regardless of his politics.

I think " SWC " is advocating physical violence within a mature western democracy against fellow citizens with whom he disagrees, which is why his posts are largely pro-Corbynite Labour ! It's a gentler style of politics, apparently !

Just been enjoying the latest series of Portillo in SE Asia. It suddenly struck me tonight that everywhere is spotless.
Going around Malaysia and I was amazed at the complete absence of litter. Henceforth every new street shot, the first thing I did was check the curbs and pavement for litter, nothing.
Two things struck me. First it must take everyone in the community/ country to buy into this tidyness / pride. Secondly where and why, have we got it so wrong.
Another strong lasting impression was how the locals, whichever the country, appreciate the old colonial masters, despite some horrific episodes, for the good that they brought as well. The infrastructure, the legal systems, the education. There seems to be no animosity at all for past misdemeanors.
