It's fairly brave I think; as a forthright/critical pundit, he's set to get a hammering if he fails.

I think he genuinely loves the game & has some decent analytical skills- be interesting to see how "man management" goes. Plenty of examples of excellent players not making anything much in management. There's always the problem of having to work with players who are not as good as themselves/ their old colleagues were.
Oldham 9 points away from the last play-off spot and 14 above a relegation place; he'll do well if he can get them spinning for a play-off.

He's got contacts enough to get a few old war horses in along with youth. He'll be no Joey though.

Mourinho will be inviting himself on that Football League show after his first defeat.

The League seem to think he has no more than a financial investment in Salford. No one at the league could have watched all the tv programmes.

The FA said it was OK has he only as a 10% share why would it be just 10% or 50% still involved.

Speaking on Granada Reports, he said the Football League has just said to keep them informed about any transfer activity between the two clubs.

But no mention of what happens if the two clubs compete in the same division.

At 10% he cannot do anything one way or another to Salford without backing. So I don't see it as being a problem. He's always said it was the only job he would ever be tempted to go into management for. So, it's like one of us getting the Burnley job he's going to give it his absolute best, you can be sure of that. I wish him well. Proper northern old fashioned midfielder. Top bloke by all accounts

How is it any different to chairman having several football clubs like the Forest, Charlton and Watfords and agents setting up camp within several clubs like at Forest, Villa and Wolves.

Nothing to see here for the time being. Should be monitored though over time

He was probably our only genuinely world class footballer for the best part of 15 years, certainly for a decade. For some reason unbeknownst to even mighty Zeus we tried to build a team around either Gerrard or Lampard, neither of which, good as they were, were fit to lace his boots.

I was privileged to see him in that United youth cup game when they gave the young clarets a right mauling, (sure CT will fill in the blanks if he sees this and can be bothered) there were some good kids out there but Scholes was on a completely different level, even then. I've kept a distant watch on him ever since. World class footballer but too reserved to embrace celebrity or he would be in national treasure land of recognition by now. And rightly so imho

No, definitely Scholes was at least a couple of years prior to Phil Neville. Think it was about the time Beckham had gone to Preston but that might be memory playing tricks.

Oh right. I thought you meant the 4-2 defeat to Utd in the Lancashire youth cup at the turf in 94. Phil Neville was head and shoulders above everyone there scoring a 20 yard volley and a run from the half way line.

No before that, think it ended up 5- or 6 to United. Can't even remember much about it other than thinking what a player I'd just watched and it was a rare visit to the Cricketfield, my previous visit had been the Milk Cup Semi against Liverpool.

Great debut for Scholes 4-1 home win over Yeovil,just 6 points from a play-off place,and a game in hand.

Ashley Cole was the only world class England player for some time.
The best left back in the world for quite a good few years.
The midfield three you speak of were all brilliant club footballers but lacked that bit extra for international football.

Scholes was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world at the time, and quite rightly. He pass accuracy was as good as the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, for example.

One of my favourite players in the premier league. The way he morphed into a quarter back from being in the hole as an attacking midfielder was amazing. Always had time, always in space. And he seems like a genuinely humble fella who has never gotten carried away with his success. Out of all the "golden generation", I hope he's the one to reach the top.

Good luck to him. We bumped into a few of their fans on Saturday in the Wetherspoons in Crawley on our way to Brighton. They were very complimentary about us.

I’ll bite, you’re suggesting Scholes wasn’t world class, even though almost to a man his peers celebrate him as such. Zidane, Xavi, Inesta et al all have gone on record and said he was the best of that generation.

Scholes was the best midfielder in the PL. The only competition he has for the all time best in the PL is David Silva

He was a fine player don't get me wrong, just watch his goggle box program with Gary Neville. He admits he retired from England as his performances were way below what they should be. That he liked playing on the left and wasn't forced out.
