Good afternoon..
I am on my way to Durham ( on a very fast train) for an Open Day at the university tomorrow. Any tips on what I should visit / have a look at up there ( besides the cathedral)..?
- any local knowledge?

One thing I do remember is that lovely view as you come out of a tunnel overlooking the City, apart from that nothing mind you I wasn’t there long.

Top train speed allowed is 140 mph, the driver has his foot down he is going to Inverness.

You should stop at York - see the sights have a pint then get back on the train

I’ve seen nearly all the sights in York and I’ve previously enjoyed many pints in York.

Walk up the cathedral tower steps all 325 of them the views are great.....

I trained in Durham and can’t come up with anything original.
The cathedral is a gem though.
Even 10 things to do in Durham has most of them in Co. Durham and not the City. It’s not the biggest place to be fair.

I once went for the weekend with Mrs AClaret and to the cricket for a ODI v Sri Lanka.
Some good boozers and restaurants I recall.
Oh and Adrian Durham is a bit of a tosser but Judith Durham is ok.

Hampstead. Look around as many colleges as possible. The ones on the Bailey (area by the Cathedral) are always oversubscribed and you can end up being offered a place at the Uni, but at a college you've not seen. That said, its a fantastic Uni and and small City. My daughter is in her 2nd year of Biology and loving it all, including the studying

The best boozer is the Coal Pitts 5 minutes Waldo from the centre.

Tip - don't bother following the words of that song and looking for the River Tyne. You might not find it!

Trains are very fast in that region to be fair. York/Leeds to Newcastle, where I live, is a rapid journey.

If you get a place at Durham to study Hampstead, give me a shout, I've lived here for 35 years and would happily guide you round all the boozers, as that's about as much as I've learned in all these years! UTC!

Beamish looks a top spot for a visit but I’m not going to get there on this trip.

My son has been offered a place and he has been allocated to a college, ( if he gets his grades in the summer) so we needed to come up and have a look round. It’s an attractive city and there are some impressive university buildings/ colleges.

I still need a lot of guidance and support every day on this planet, and I mess up fairly regularly - finding my way round a bunch of pubs though and negotiating a good path through, has never been an issue for me, so I will not be carousing with you sadly in the near future..

Line speed in most areas between KX and Durham is 125mph.
Love that route because you still have the classic HSTs and Class 91s (electric)

MiltonKeynesClaret.. Kings Cross to Durham ( change at York) I did from midday to 2.50 pm.. fare was £150 return for me with a railcard was £100.

- a very smooth easy journey, much better than going to Burnley from London.

Hampstead - Glad you liked it. Which college has he been offered? My daughter wanted Castle or St Chads, but got offered Van Mildert, which we hadn't looked around. More modern but thoroughly enjoyed her 1st year in halls. Think you have to empty your room for Christmas/Easter at some colleges for conferences

ClaretTim.. St Hild and St Bede’s which is just north of the city centre.. nice buildings, very traditional..we had a good look around yesterday at nearly everything... on our way back in an hour. Cheers.
