I think they were just a bunch of lads enjoying mucking about and getting paid for it and they didn't seem to take themselves too seriously, yet in the end they let the music do the talking and much of it has stood the test of time. Great childhood memories as mentioned.

Met him when he did an impromptu gig at The Sun Inn about 11-12 years ago (no, honestly)

Bit quiet but happily signed autographs and posed for photos.

Getting home from the match just in time to see The Monkees on TV on a Saturday. As mentioned, they made some great tunes none better than Pleasant Valley Sunday, a little sideways swipe at middle America of the 60's.

Saw Mickey Dolenz on Broadway in New York in 2003 in Aida (not the Verdi opera but the Tim Rice/Elton John collaberation) he was the Pharaoh....

My mate (who wrote a book about The Monkees) will be distraught tonight. Not exactly ecstatic myself.

Saw them a few years (7ish?) ago on their last UK tour when Davy Jones was still with us. Fantastic even for a made-up band!

Coincidentally his name came up on the Glen Campbell docu, on BBC4 last week. Micky Dolenz told the story of him turning up with his bass to play on some of the songs but the Wrecking Crew, for those who don't know LA superstar session musicians, had it all in hand and he was politely told he wouldn't be needed. He did end up a fine bass player.

That really is sad. He was quite a musician.
The Monkees were my group. I have all their UK records in the loft. I used to record the songs on my tape recorder. Everyone had to be quiet. However, my Scottish grandad, who was a bit deaf, used to come to tea on Saturday. I had lots of recordings, suddenly interrupted by a very loud Scottish voice asking for something. Others were interrupted by the kitchen door opening, followed by my mum saying something like, "More tea anyone?" Or "teas ready, shall I bring it in?" Etc.

Yes that one was not on any of the LPs. I got my 'very much played' copy of the 45 from a girl at school.
