But so many of our ex players have fallen in love with us as a club. They’ll leave and play elsewhere but their hearts seem to remain in this little mill town - Trippier at the minute says he’d love to one day come back. Whilst playing at one of the “best” clubs in the world. Players like Jensen who got slated by a lot of our fans still loved Burnley FC. Going right back to Jimmy Mac went away and moved back and said it was home. Someone also just mentioned Tommy Hutchinson being at Swansea but his mind being on Burnley not going down through his mind all day.

What makes us special for players than other clubs?

I think most players say it about the clubs they had success at, obviously all your memories are great.

I have this weird thing about never going back to holiday destinations I’ve had a great time as I don’t want it to have changed and my memories of the place to be bad (odd I know) The plus side is I’ve been to a lot of different countries

Not true of Tommy Hutch, he was here at one of the worst periods of a clubs decline in the history of the game. Fought like a an aging proud tiger for us and then was passed over for the managers job and released. The fact Tommy loved the club was despite some bitter disappointments he suffered here.

Even though I have been exiled for 7 of my 57 years what makes Burnley special for me - our town, our club, our ground, our team - and to quote from Highlander “there can be only one”

Burnley is just as special as other normal places like Ipswich, Derby, Wrexham, Huddersfield and Stoke.

There's simply no other town in England as small as Burnley that has competed at anything like as high a level in the football pyramid over a sustained period. The only two I can think of that are debatable are Watford and Middlesborough - the former is really a centre within the north London commuter belt sprawl that is much bigger, and Middlesborough is impossible to distinguish from the broader Teeside area. Burnley has some satellites, but its essentially a clearly defined town in its own right.

In that sense, as a football town, it is unique. As someone who isn't from Burnley and only really has an association with the town through football, it seems to me that that uniqueness creates an atmosphere and a focus on the football club that creates a dynamic that I don't believe is replicated anywhere else.

Your first sentence and last paragraph sums it up nicely. The richness of our history is disproportionate to the size of town. It is a positive focal point for the town and area as a whole. It is unique and we are very lucky to have such a club to support.

I think it’s the over abundance of thoughtful, open minded, welcoming and intelligent people that live in Burnley plus the fact that smack is cheap.

Allow me to add my opinion from afar. Burnley is where I was born and raised until I left many years ago, that doesn’t alter the fact Burnley is my home, always will be. To this day I still keep in touch with friends I met during my formative years and visit them whenever I’m over ‘ome. Memories of supping too many pints in The Keirby, Sparrow Hawk in Fence, Pendle Inn, Bay Horse in Wortshorne etc, etc fondly remain in what’s left of my memory.

As for BFC, we’ve always been an overachieving small town club in an area surrounded by ‘bigger clubs’ such as Man Utd, ‘Pool, Leeds (!!) Bolton (!) and Rovers (!!!), et al. Sure, I lost touch with what was going on with our club during the ‘bad years’ until the advent of the Internet. I was following the playoff final on the internet in ’09 at work while neglecting my work duties. I couldn’t wait to tell my co-workers we’re baaaaaack! The general reply was…..Burnley…………where’s Burnley! Believe me when I say I was….to quote Dyche…..”the proudest man in proudsville” to see our little club, with a rich, storied history, return to the 1st division. Too bad ‘Judas’ left us for so called greener pastures, we were on to a good thing. The Dyche era is something to behold and cherish, it won’t last forever…..enjoy it lads!


What I’m saying is, no matter where we wander during our life journey, we must be proud to be Burnley, and support BFC throughout thick and thin. WE ARE BURNLEY!

I watched a sky documentary called Burnley's Champions. It was an interview about the 1959/60 season. It was Jeff Stelling interviewing Alex Elder John Connolly and Jimmy Mcllroy. It must have been filmed around 2010 as both John Connolly and Jimmy Mcllroy are both dead now. John Connolly mentioned the people of Burnley and how they feel about the club. That's what makes it special for me.

I can top your story, exile. On the morning that Burnley won promotion to the Prem, (it was morning over here), I was driving around Newmarket, Ontario, in my job as a rush courier. Driving down Davis Drive at about 11:45, I was desperate to find out the score of the game. Since bars don't open until 11:00 (no free houses here), I found one on the corner of Davis and Main. I went in and saw one team wearing funny-coloured kind of turquoise colours. Special shirts. And WE WERE AHEAD! Two minutes later, the final whistle was blown, and I was absolutely ecstatic. Problem was, I had nobody to share my joy with. Native-born Canadians mostly just understand football. How can you enjoy a game that ends up 1-0? Well, if you truly understand the game, you soon discover that it's the best sport in the world. And if your little club from somewhere that nobody over here understands, then, Y-E-S!!!! It was the greatest feeling I've ever experienced.
