Im just wondering if this is a correct thing to do when people are begging in the shopping centre's ect, sometimes i spare a few loose coins & sometimes rush past avoiding eye contact if cash strapped. What do other people do regarding beggars?

Sometimes buy them a brew and a pasty from Gregg's. Usually received gratefully, especially in winter.

The correct thing to do, is log into Facebook and start live streaming. Buy said person something from Gregg's or subway (dont forget to tell your audience that this is more helpful than giving them money that they will just spend on alcohol or drugs) and get your snotty nosed kid to hand it to the homeless person whilest looking into the camera

There are 2 reasons I don't give money to homeless people.
1. They want the money to buy drugs.
2. I want the money to buy drugs.

Most in Burnley are not homeless. Probably make a good amount of money for their particular habit. I have been fooled in the past but no more! I usually buy food, but the last time I bought a hot pie and a coffee on a cold day, the response I received from the recipient was “cheers mate, is it meat and potato”?

I don’t doubt there are deserving cases, but haven’t seen any locally. Manchester seems overwhelmed with genuine homeless people. All appear to have a habit, so until that is addressed there is little hope. Give clothes and food probably best option.

Manchester has a real issue with it. I must see over ten on my 20 min walk through the town centre each morning.

I'll always stop and say I don't have any change (usually true) rather than ignore them. I have given food in the past but should do it more often.

I think ignoring them is rude but can understand why people do it.

And the inevitable, depressing reply regarding the homeless in Burnley pops up - albeit a little later than usual - at #6

About 6 months ago I was walking through Preston town centre. I was going home from the train station when I nipped into Tesco for a bottle of red.

When entering I passed a scruff outside with a maingy old dog so on the way out did my morale duty and gave him £1, he said ‘I’m not a f***cking tramp you pr1ck, my wife’s inside’, true story.

I work in Manchester and from Salford Central to my office 300 yards away I pass 3 or 4 homeless folk each time I’m there.

I mean don't refer to them as tramps that's one etiquette. The rest is up to you.

Vast majority,certianly in Manchester are just junkies so unless your're offering them a couple of crack rocks or some spice not much point. They're neevr short on food though as everyone gives em half eaten burgers pasties etc etc

If they have a dog I tend to shoot it in the head. It’s better than giving them a quid because caring for a dog cost more than that

If they look hungry I buy a disposable bbq and tell them to lob the dog on it

You could give them some flour or icing sugar wrapped in cellophane as an alternative gift.

My wife always gives to the lad on the underpass to the bus station after the match. He gets a quid for the total number of goals scored in the match.

A well known Burnley fan maybe 15 yrs back went from normal regular guy to tramp living on the streets in Manchester and I think he got himself back to normality eventually . His name escapes me but possibly something like “ Ant” or Enty?

Giving or not giving, it's entirely up to you, but I suspect that urinating all over them whilst they are sleeping is probably poor etiquette tbh.

Actually, I know full well in most cases it's simply funding some sort of habit and I also agree that most if not all those around Burnley are not genuinely homeless, but for a few years now I've been in the habit of giving a couple of quid if I see one on my walk to the Turf from town, as I did it once and I convinced myself it brought us good luck! If I don't see any before I'm on the match, I always think it's going to be bad day!! (Yeah,weird innit!?)

If one person in a hundred gives them a couple of quid before/after the match, that's £4,000 being shared out among the sitters. No wonder they're congregating at the Turf!

I'll give money to those selling the Big Issue, that's it for me.

After becoming away of numerous 'homeless' people going home at the end of the day I stopped giving away my loose change.

Same with a couple near to me who moved back to sleeping on the street from a house they'd been given via social, because they preferred it on the street, they'll get a fair amount of food from people in my town, but not so much money anymore.

But seriously folks……There’s an unkempt character often lurking outside my local booze store asking for loose change from store patrons. One day I spotted him walk around the corner and get into a taxi, I guess he’d finished his ‘shift’.

These are not the homeless you fool. They are well travelled pilgrims wanting to visit their Mecca. The birthplace of football. Thet sit outside glum leaving the game early dissapointed.

As normal saw a few today in Manchester
All young enough to work. One said Any Change? I said yes its going to snow next week. Seriously the streets of the City centre are littered with them. We have a serious drug epidemic in our country. Blame Brexit.
