Going on holiday soon and in need of a good book...

I tend to stick to crime/thrillers - I’ve read all of the Lee Child and Michael Connelly books. I recently read I am Pilgrim which was excellent.

Any recommendations?

Try George Pelecanos...an American writer who was one of the writers who worked on The Wire and who has written a whole string of crime novels set mainly in Washington DC. A crime writer with a heart and who clearly has a deep feeling for the city he sets his stories in. Read more good books by him than I can think of but the first one I read, which really made me want to read more, was King Suckerman so I'll recommend that.
Mark Billingham is a good British author with his series of police thrillers featuring his detective Tom Thorne.
Stuart Mcbride's police books featuring the detective Logan McRea set in Scotland can be good...Cold Granite is the first I think and really good....though the later ones have jumped the shark imo
Peter May's Lewis trilogy...start with The Black House....set on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

It sounds as if you like something fairly fast moving and American. I think you would like anything by David Baldacci.

I'd suggest John Sandford and the Prey series. There's a lot of them but worth starting at the start which I'm pretty sure is Rules of Prey.

Also Robert Crais and his Elvis Cole series.

Don Winslow and The Power of the Dog is also excellent

Try "Alone in Berlin" by Hans Fallada. It has a "sticking point" - where you can no longer put it down, and is also well written throughout.

Take a step up from Childs and Connolly and try James Ellroy. As Stalbansclaret says, George Pelecanos is to be recommended. An easier read than Ellroy but hellish good. I can't think of too many British crime writers I like.

Connelly is amazing and the Haller / Bosch tales are hard to match but if you want to try an English writer go for James Craig and the Inspector Carlyle series...try reading them in order.

If you have Amazon audible, I recommend Mario Puzo's "The Godfather." Even if you have seen the film ( and who hasn't?) It is a truly great story, that fills in many blanks, and read by a multi voiced narrator.

I too recommend John Connolly and his Charlie Parker series. A hint of dark, supernatural themes throughout.

The Day after tomorrow by Allan Folsham. It’s not the same story as the film. Excellent read and grips you from page 1.

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith.

First book of his trilogy and they're all excellent reads.

Here's an offbeat one: ''The Shotgun Rule'' by American writer Charlie Huston. It's 1983 in a small town outside Oakland and a group of teenagers stumble across a drugs haul but are soon in way over their heads. Stylishly written, this is classic pulp noir.
