After a trip to the lakes i got to wondering about camping up there. its years since i have been camping.I have an estate car so perhaps throwing a tent and gear in back makes sense. I love a decent shower so if anyone can recommend a good site or 2 and any tips on gear etc that would be welcomed.

A lot of campsites have tents already up for you and different levels of comfort.
I would certainly go 'Glamping' before you buy all the gear.
England is full of people who buy 1000s of pounds worth of camping gear and then either want to upgrade to a Caravan/Motorhome or don't like it. Losing lots of money in the process.

Lovely small camping site at scar head torver ,it's next to a working farm ,it has showers and it is ideally placed to walk up the old man coniston.

If you want location location there is the site in the middle of Bowness, shower block looked good. Brathwaite Fold I think it's called. Mate has put his motor home on there twice. It is busy all year round and would probably need to book.
Park Coppice which is on the shores of Coniston. There is another next to it. Again, mates have put tourers/ vans on there, I've only visited.
We used to use campsite uk website for reviews and guidance.

some good places everywhere, but do some homework beforehand. some are full of noisy ignorant ***** with no respect for other campers.

Don't go anywhere near the Wye valley if your brain is still functioning.

Depends what level of tent you want. £100 will get you something useful for a couple of people for a few days if you just want somwhere to kip. You'll spend more than that on one 'glamp'.

There is a company on eBay who constantly sell tents at very good prices.
I picked a 4man one up in one of their auctions a bit ago for myself and the missus - was about £30 I won it for and it was very good. Usually about £200 in shops.

Is your missus a man?

Great Langdale at Old Dungeon Ghyll is where I've gone in the past.
As for tents I use a Terra Nova Solar. Expensive but will last a while and can withstand any weather conditions in the UK.

Castlerigg just above Keswick. New shower block that is like posh hotel. Cafe/bar for breakfast etc. Pub a minute away. Keswick a short walk away. Great location.

How's much does it cost to pitch a tent at one of these sites?

Need quite a bit of gear, even with a small one man tent.

If you're going to The Lakes consider stopping a night or two in Dent on the way up. Great quaint place with 2 local pubs. 2 sites to go at - stay at Conder with Mick and Wendy and not High Laining, which is more expensive.Beautiful Dentdale is in Cumbria but is part of The Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Many's the night I've slept in the car..on the outskirts of Penzance ..free..choice of chippy or kebab shops...morning wash in my y fronts in front of the sink in the bogs on Penzance station....cheap as chips...no noisy campsite trogs, bloaters snoring like foghorns, bawling brats making a racket..or stumbling barefoot to the bogs at midnight falling over guy ropes...

I'm pretty sure hotels were invented so you don't have to. I'm led to believe some of the better ones actually have a shower and toilet, in your room. Can you believe it?

Aye, but you can't exactly like like Grizzly Adams in a hotel room, can you?

I prefer Hamping - staying in a hotel instead of a tent.

Hotels are fine if you pull some married bird who says she's too old for a knee trembler, and you don't mind that the Latvian hired help could have left the crusty old sheets on from some sketchy old glimmers in gimp suits that used the bed before you.
Or that the bed could have been the scene of some angry bird laying a Boston Pancake (aka Cleveland Steamer) less than 24 hours before.
Give me the great outdoors, and the sound of rain on the tent roof anyday.

Why not check out the camping and caravanning club website. I think almost all their sites are open to non members (if you get the bug then why not join?)
The facilities on club sites are superb.
I've stayed at their Derwent water site, it is a short walk into Keswick and on the shores of Derwent Water. Has views out over the lake towards Cat Bells, it's a brilliant site.

Let the cat sleep on the bed ... you can wake up to the sight of Cat Balls every morning as the Moggy grooms its self
