Around Sunday teatime I will be making that journey from Halifax to Burnley and thought I might treat the wife to a meal on the way.

Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions for pub grub along this route. I'm sure there are plenty of options but would be grateful for any recommendations.

I heard a while ago that the Staff of Life was quite decent, anyone eaten in there recently?

Glen view. Think it’s in Portsmouth. No, not THAT one, the one between Burnley and Tod. Not many better anywhere round here.

Don’t be put off by the exterior.... the grub is absolutely lovely.

Staff of life is good, Glen view is very good too. Few weeks a go I went to the White House up blackstone edge above Littleborough and thought it was very, very good indeed if you fancy taking the long way round to get to Halifax.
Actually depending on when you travel and with the road works in the Calder valley going that way can often be quicker.

On that road, I have enjoyed The Ram.

Go the scenic route and over the moors form Hebden Bridge and to the Pack Horse pub at Widdop. Great steak sandwiches at the very least. Fantastic beer and best scenery in the world can try and compare.

Ram Inn is in my top 5 worst, wouldn’t even go in there for a drink due to really bad food experiences which is a shame as it’s in a great setting.

Staff of life is usually decent but I’d book at that time to be safe.

Glen View was ok but never understood the huge fuss.

Kettle Drum, I’ve never had a bad meal to be fair, used to go very frequently when I lived in Burnley.

Bistro 197 on Tod road is very good! Again you would need to book.

I eat out 2-3 times a week and I suppose I am quite fussy about cleanliness and service. Burnley itself isn’t blessed with restaurants but there are some good ones on the outskirts.

Ram Inn went downhill a long time ago. Wouldn't bother

Always liked the Glen View. Toilets are a bit "longside" but food always good

Kettledrum would get my vote. Can get busy in the evenings so booking would be advised

I also struggle to find places, or find after the first visit/a while it has been open it goes down hill and standards slip.

To be honest they change regularly and I’ve not eaten out as often recently due to moving house and holidays taking up the spare money. I do like places like Fence Gate for pub grub when I’m hungover

Staff of Life was decent when we were there a year ago

Your satnav must be playing up if you think any of those pubs are en route between Halifax and Burnley

Stubbing Wharf at Hebden Bridge is always busy and food is good. Ale is even better.

I'm sure there are about 6 months worth of eateries knocking about a 20 mile radius. Still time yet.

Hare and Hounds up Hare Syke has recently had new management and supposed to be very good.

Summit Inn on Todmorden road just as you leave Littleborough has changed hands in the last year or so and is very good for food and beer

The Old Gate and White Lion in Hebden Bridge were both very good a couple of years ago but haven't been since the floods at Christmas time in 2015.

Get thy self to t’Staff of Life. It’s still excellent.
Whilst you’re there, you can pay my outstanding bar bill.

I'd definitely agree with the Staff Of Life - my former local and eat there quite regularly.

Hare and Hounds in Todmorden does really decent food as well.

On a related topic, as others on here share my opinion, the food at the Ram is appalling. Every now and again we give it another go and its still as bad.
Under better ownership with the beautiful building, and amazing setting this could be one of the best pubs in the area.

I did the same thing, I visited once whilst walking past with the dog and my dog barked slightly when he saw another dog and I was told off by the manager before I had even ordered my drink.

I have had dirty cutlery twice, a tagliatelle that tasted of bleach, I told them this and they took my food away in a strop and didn’t come back so we walked out about 10 minutes later.

We also went in after finishing a fell race, all sat tired in the beer garden in our running attire, one of the group took his trainers off and was told off again by the manager. I could understand if this was in the restaurant.

It may well be different now, I haven’t been in for about 2 years.

Ram Inn- Personally I've found it to be OK, nothing special but average, went a few times last summer as it's a good place to sit outside and enjoy a cold one with the good weather.
Maybe we caught them on a "good day" I couldn't say, but certainly wouldn't say it was as bad as some say on here. Average is what I'd say

Staff is excellent, but would book beforehand. Kettledrum is also very good indeed. Both these serve excellent real ale too. Like others have said, avoid the Ram and also Nino's.

I always feel a little sad when I drive past the Ram Inn. A lovely building in a stunning setting, but unfortunately it's a pub selling cheap ping-food. Just think what it could be like if it served up food and beer that was of a similar standard to the Staff of Life. It would be a goldmine.

The Staff is the pub in the middle of the S bend near Cornholme?

Where do you park when you go there? Just checked on Google maps and doesn't seem to be a car park.

Would be nice to try somewhere new next time I'm up

There’s a car park just beyond it. Foods always at least 7 out of 10.

Ram inns abysmal. Can’t believe it’s still going it’s that bad.

Top brinks Inn always looks good but only ever drunk in there.

If you're coming from Burnley - the car park is the first left after the pub.

Just an update......

We decided to try the Stubbing Wharf at Hebden Bridge on the way home.
It was around 4.30pm and the pub was quite busy but they found us a table for 2.
We had 2 Sunday roasts from the chef's special board and we both had a sweet. The food was very good, didn't have to wait long and the total cost was 27 quid for the 2 of us.

Would certainly reccomend this place.

The Stubbing is a cracking place. I often pop in there for refreshment on a bike ride. Whenever I’ve had food, it’s always been inexpensive and tasty. Good beer, too.

Stubbing is great at Christmas too - really cosy with the decorations and the fire roaring and they do a great Christmas dinner, went on Christmas Eve last year.

Top Brink I don’t think has been mentioned - on the tops above Todmorden. Brilliant location, great food. Consistent as well.

This. The drive from Colne to Hebden Bridge over Widdop and past Hardcastle Crags is honestly one of the most jaw-droppingly scenic drives in the UK imho. I did my Uni dissertation up there, measuring river cross-sections above and below the reservoirs, and it's just a stupendously, bleakly beautiful area.I've taken any people up there over the years and the usual reaction is "why isn't this better known than it is ?". Thankfully it remains relatively below the radar for most people in the UK.
The Pack Horse is a great pub, as Pstotto says, and the sausage and mash is top-notch.

Another thumbs-up for the Top Brink, and honourable mentions for the Polished Knob opposite Tod market, and the New Delight at Colden: Yorkshire value beer and grub.

Is Park View chippy open yet?

I now tell everyone not to visit, it's a dump, same as easyjet:

'Thank you for flying with easyjet and enjoy your stay in the London area' (...and keep away from everywhere else!)
