Tripps to Atletico Madrid

If the move goes through as expected, will he be the player that has gone on to have the best career out of any ex claret?
First on to Spurs who finished 2nd in the league and played in a champs league final. Scored in a world cup semi final for England.
Then onto the 3rd best club in Spain.
Only Trevor Steven could come close, that I'm aware of.

Doubt it-didn't he have a get out clause when he re signed for us meaning a bid of £3 mill secured his release

John Connelly won both a league title and a World Cup winner's medal after he left Burnley. On the other hand, he also played for Blackburn Rovers, so you could argue there were more negatives than positives.

Out of interest is he going to Athletico as first or second choice right-back?

It's a lot of money for a 2nd choice full back.

True, although we paid quite a few million on a striker just to sit on the bench!

Last I’d heard his wife was “ checking out the local schools in Naples prior to his medical at Napoli “.. his agent has been touting him round like a cheap wh0re , Napoli/Bayern/Juve/Athletico et al . Looks like this one could be on though so let’s hope it works for him . Shame a talent like that isn’t a guaranteed perm starter .if he was “ Kiereno Trippiero” the rest of the top 6 would be on their hands and knees for his signature

I'd probably say that Trevor Steven more than came close. He won major honours in England with Everton, played for Rangers and then Marseille.

Mike Phelan won The Premier League and the ECWC with United as a player, before everything he achieved as Fergie’s assistant as well.

Strange one with Morley in that he was full of promise at Preston but it never really happened for him at Burnley. Proved to be outstanding for Villa.

It seemed difficult to accommodate Morley and Kindon in the same side. Both left-sided attacking players even though Morley was a winger and KIndon played the left side striker.

I remember Terry Chochrane scoring a cracker at Ewood during the same era. Can’t remember TM doing it, but could be wrong.

A crying shame if he goes as I for one will miss enjoying watching him send over those perfect crosses in the premier league most weeks. A good move for him though. Hope it works out, if not we'll have him back.

Guess it’s a case of some clubs and some managers seem to get the very best out of players.
Tony Morley was brilliant for Villa but he also joined a team with some really good players who went on to achieve a lot with Villa and never really hit those heights afterwards.
Always felt the same with Clough’s Forest - he got the very best out of every player. You look at someone like John Robertson and there was probably not a better winger around - off the pitch he looked more like a Sunday League player. Clough knew how good he was and I love that interview before the European Cup Final when they asked Clough about the Hamburg right back saying how he was supposed to be the best in the world. Clough told him about his left winger not being “too bad” - Robertson absolutely murdered him in that final in one of the best winger displays you could see.
I can’t even remember who Robertson played for other than Forest - was just a perfect storm under Clough.

He went to Derby and eventually back to Forest but that was it. He was Martin O'Neill's assistant at a number of clubs but I think he retired after they left Villa.

He didn't have a bad career.

£20 million sounds very cheap to me, he wasn't the first player to have an off season after a World Cup and one in which he played superbly for the most part.
Unless there's something we don't know about.

He's 29, and being realistic, he'll have no chance of playing for England again unless quite a few other players get injured.

A 29 or 28yo and played like he did in the World Cup and yet months later he is all of a sudden only worth 20 million?
No it doesent add up to me.

Possibly because he had a very poor season and is no long considered good enough for England. Added to the fact that Spurs have been looking to replace him and are willing to let him go.
When you add all that together no one is going to be paying top dollar for him.

Atletico aren't in direct competition with Spurs either so will get him for less than what a PL side would.

I’ll take issue with this.
He’s been overtaken in the pecking order by arguably the best full back in the world. Behind him coming through is a lad who United have paid £50 million for and there is the small matter of another £50 million full back at the League Champions.
It’s our strongest position on the park. If he played for England he’d do a very good job, no doubt in my mind. Others being better doesn’t mean he isn’t good enough.

I think Athletico will be good for him. They are supported by the working class side of Madrid whereas Real are the prawn sandwich eaters. I think Athletico's fans will take to him.

One of the best crosses of a ball in world football. Shame he can't defend at all. He gets lost positionally too much and is awful in the air.
He would be better playing at RM like a Beckham role.
