Motorpoint

Has anyone on here bought a car from Motorpoint? I need to give up my company car when I retire at the end of the year and obviously need to replace it with something. Motorpoint seem to have some decent buys on the face of it including many with 3 or 4 years balance of manufacturers warranty still valid. Obviously with them having an outlet in Burnley some of you might know are they easy to deal with or are they a bit dodgy?

Not bought one from there. But know one of the managers and he’s a really good lad. Genuine person who I would definitely buy from.

I was weighing up whether to buy one from there recently and the prices are extremely good from what I saw. Particularly on nearly new.

Used them 10 years ago seemed ok but after checking Autotrader there were many cars same model/mileage/age for the same or lower price. Also told them the date I could get my money out but they still kept phoning me to come and get the car. Do not expect them to negotiate on price or trade in. I would not use them again.

Got my current car from there 4 years ago. Good price, dead easy to deal with and haven't had a single issue with car since I bought it

Good cars but they send their better/more expensive cars down south as more desire for them.

They make most of their profits from selling car finance.

I once bought a car from there and had a few problems, the first being the car wasn't ready when i went to collect it, the second being when it was finally ready for collection it couldn't be taxed as it was an ex mobility/disabled car. it was several years ago but again i wouldn't use them again.

Probably a bit unfair to criticise them for that; most car buyers do their browsing online now so dealers have to advertise cars at their bottom prices to attract buyers so don’t have the “wriggle room” they had in the past.

Thanks everybody, I guess it will be a "gut feeling" when I speak to them or anyone else about a car.

The cars are very competively priced, and they do not haggle on prices. Their part ex prices are poor, but that should not affect you. They make most of their profits on add on products, such as " Paint & fabric protection treatments " and " Return to Invoice or Gap " Insurances. They will push their " Boomarang " deals, where you finance half the car's value for 3 years, and then be faced with a " balloon " final payment or return the car and take on a new arrangement.

Because the cars are all relatively new, ie: normally under 30 months old, they have very little come-backs, as the cars are under warranty and go back to main-dealers for any issues. Your selected car may be an ex-hire car, or if a pre-registered model, may well be an import. If it's an import, then that will almost certainly affect it's residual value, when you come to sell it on ..

My Dad has just packed up driving, at 83, and he bought his last car there, in February 2016. A brand new Honda CRV 2.0 Auto, imported, so saved £8,500 on UK list price ...

Hope this helps ...

Second hand cars from anywhere are a bit of a lottery wherever you buy them from. New ones probably are as well but i’ve never had one.

Just buy the car, avoid the pressure to buy extras such as GAP insurance, paint protection, finance, and you'll get a good deal. Bought at least ten, maybe more over past few years, no real problems.

When I bought the Jag it was at their Swansea Branch so only saw it online... They brought it up to Burnley after I paid a £100 refundable fee if I bought the car .... it qas an absolute belting motor less than 1/2 price with 23000 on the clock. Ive had it 2 years and absolutely no problems at all.

The 1st 3 we had for 3 to 4 years each and traded them in, plus the trade in prices were market values for a trade in ie 30% more than webuyanycar.com .

Bloke I work with was telling me his young lad sells cars and he once asked him if he could find a van for a work mate who wanted to pay cash, “Fuc£ that, it’s too much hassle for no pay when they pay cash” he apparently only gets £15 for a cash sale!!! Fair play to car salesman, working weekends etc

Not criticising just stating a fact.

Or should that be FACT. :D

Fair enough, maybe should have said it was a bit unfair to single them out for it when it is an industry-Wife trend.

Had about 5 from them over the years never had a problem. Avoid the add ones though like gap etc.

One of my best mates has worked his way up the ranks there and no longer actually “sells” cars - another mate is a salesman at Burnley so ask for Matthew when you go in and you’ll be looked after.

I’ll be looking for a car myself soon and will be going down to sort it with them.

You will get an acceptable deal from them. Their pricing is competitive so don't try to be clever thinking you have to drive the price down.
They will try and get you into a finance deal but it will be within reasonable parameters. A pretty stress free experience unless you feel you
must prove your negotiating prowess.

I'm 90% sure Matthew dealt with me and my Dad when he bought his car in February 2016, he'd just become a Dad at that time, does that ring true ? He was very patient and " non-pushy " with my parents, which was much appreciated ...

Everything is negotiable. Why would it be stressful attempting to pay less money for something?

I'd agree to an extent but I know what COBBLE is getting at. In my job I sell refurbished IT hardware and our USP is being the most competitively priced within the industry. There's a fairly limited number of players so we can be confident we're offering the best price most of the time. I often get people haggling for the sake of it even after I politely explain they're unlikely to find it cheaper anywhere else, and it can be quite amusing when they come back to confirm the order a few days after telling me what I've quoted will never work.

Bought 2 this year and drove both away same day. True, you can't negotiate on price, but you can on trade in if they're desperate for month end targets. Got £450 extra trade in with one hour to go to close for month end. Be brave or walk away. No complaints about dealing with them. Kept it friendly and light hearted.

I was advised never go there as it's a chore and not very good off a couple who have had cars from them.

Itd be unfair to judge though until/if I ever used them.

The finance deals and the buy after 3 year options are terrible offers though, avoid at all costs, as you'll pay way over the top.

Could well have been, he’s a great lad and the not being pushy etc rings true with his demeanour. I also had a friend contact the mate who was higher up to sort a deal and when it was all done it turned out Matt had already gotten him a better deal than what was offered further up the line

I've bought two...the first was an 07 plate Peugeot...almost new and a perfect purchase.
The 2nd after I travelled up from Sussex for a home game (Southampton win in 2014)...I stepped off the train at Rose Grove and a little over an hour later I was parked up outside the turf in a VW Up. Again not 12 months old and I still have the car. You will get the salesman trying to sell extra warranties etc but I just said no.
Only issue I had add on both occasions was that there was no second key....I made it clear on purchase that they were to supply one and eventually they did.l

I'll buy my next car there

My mother-in-law bought her last car there and has been very happy. The price was great and the staff were good with her. We’ve been to look but not find what we were after.

The finance deals are similar at all the car show rooms, personally not used them but 9/10 cars are sold that way in the UK and doubt the car industry are doing it for anything other than their own gain.

The manager mentioned by a couple of posters was my neighbour for a number of years and I never got the impression that he/his team were out to screw people.

Andrew Whiteside was the Salesman for my last purchase....

My Sister and BinL got their Little Citroen Berlingo there a few years ago they were up here on holiday from Netley Abbey. I took my BinL along and he came away with a low mileage Berlingo    didn't trade in as they gave my nephew the old one ... drove back south with the 2 cars

Been involved in buying three cars from them, one for me .

Others for friends.

Not as often nowadays but you need to ask if it’s a UK car.

They used to import a few and main dealers would refuse to service or fix them.

You can get a low mileage, less than a year old car at a fraction of new price.
