O/T - Barcelona

Myself and the other half are heading to Barcelona in September for a 4 night stay.

I've heard very good things from friends, but I was wondering if anyone's got advice on the best things to see and do whilst we're there?

So far we've booked the Nou Camp tour - I had hoped to see Messi play, but they aren't playing at home over the weekend we're going  .

Plenty of people will come on and give you advice about the City I'm sure but if you are going for as long as 4 nights then I recommend you take the short train trip out and visit the monastery at Montserrat via the cable car . Spectacular and a great half-day out.

Download google translate on your phone. When you run the camera over the text it translates it in real time.

For when you use the transport systems.

Fundació Joan Miró. Casa Milà aka La Pedrera - particularly at night. Parc Guell. Day trip to Figueras for the Dalí museum. Montserrat as above.

At 1.54 - 'The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away' - and it takes my breath away when I hear Freddie sing that line.

Barcelona is a great city but there are a lot of pickpockets and distraction thieves operating. They use every trick in the book from distracting you with children to the simple bump in the street.Would suggest you minimise the amount of credit cards etc that you take out with you.

Definitely go and watch Espanyol. New 40,000 stadium probably good football, always interesting but keep off the sunflower seed snacks...bloody awful.

If you go to the beach, go to the Olympic area, tube Cuitadella and the twin towers, avoid the beach nearest the centre, I've had a bag nicked when there was nobody on the beach, they are THAT GOOD, trained from nappies to thieve.

Montjuic where the Olympic stadium is, has fantastic views over the city and container port. They have big gigs and trade fairs, check listings.

Clubs start at 2-45 AM. Don't go before to a nightclub. Bars start getting busy after 10.30 pm, they eat late.

Be wary of Placa Real, off the Ramblas and the streets to the south like Calle Escudellas. Some nice bars but be ready for trouble.

For art, MACBA to the East of the Ramblas is OK, Fundaciaon Tapies a bit more exotic stuff and Fundacion Miro on Montjuic also interesting, There's aslo a cable car across the port if your dare.

Buy a T-10 tube ticket, saves bother, ten rides.

True (the bit about thieves - I didn't rate the city that highly but to each their own). One of the worst cities for it. Although you should be grateful if it's only distraction theft and not just openly snatched as you're walking along in the city centre.

Get the bus or cable car up to Montjuic Castle then after doing that a steady walk, downhill all the way, to Olympic stadium, Palau Catalonia(art gallery), magic fountain and Plaza Espana.
Totally agree with the train ride out to Montserrat. The trains depart from the underground station below Plaza Espana.

Cheers - I'll be sure to check some of those places out.

We are staying in the Gothic Quarter which I think covers the Las Ramblas area and which I had been told can be a hotspot for thieves, so I'll try to keep my wits about me after a couple, or so, Estrellas!

As Mentioned Mountjuic.....fantastic views and a feeling of Dejavu!
