The Newcastle goalkeeper for our goal was unbelievable.

Probably, but Paddy Roach could be a contender.

Didn't Gifton once help demolish St Peter's car park?

Superb footage and first time seen, for me.
The match was in Jan'54 and it's odd to see the Longside with no roof. However, later that same year the Club spent £20,000 on a roof.
Four players in the Burnley team that day that were to feature in the Division One Champions side six years later. Adamson, Cummings, McIlroy and Pilkington.

Informative post. Both sets of fans in the CF End.

Excellent footage. But the absolute worst penalty ever seen on the Turf has to be Steve Taylor against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup quarter final in 1983.

Aye, no segregation of fans back then, Quicknick. And no bother whatsoever.
Full team was......Des Thompson, Jock Aird, Harold Mather, Jimmy Adamson, Tommy Cummings, Reg Attwell, Billy Gray, Jimmy Mac, Bill Holden, Les Shannon & Brian Pilkington.

I was at that game and near where the penalty was taken. The pitch was rock hard and these days would have been postponed. Mitchell I think took the penalty but stubbed his toe as he took the kick and it just pea rolled to Thompson.
Very different game but similar crowd to the 3rd round against United.

No - but no one uses the balcony on the cricket pavilion any more
John Angus once hit a penalty out of the ground - for the life of me I still can't fathom why he was taking a penalty in the first place.

The goalkeeper was Ronnie Simpson that day. Over 13 years later he was in the Celtic team that won the European Cup.

Surely there's one doing the rounds when Burnley Played Halifax in the auto windshield ? Was it Chris Brass who fell over on his run up to shoot?? This has got to be the worst ever...ever!!

I think I could list a considerable number of penalties I've seen missed on the Turf that were worse than Taylor's.

Amazing footage, makes me wonder why we don't sell out some games now when you see how many people used to go !!

It’s a different time now and we would never get that many on today even if the ground was big enough. Over 52,000 that day because it was the FA Cup which was massive back then.
We’ve not had a 50,000 plus crowd on the Turf since the cup tie against Everton in 1962.

indeed, but looking at the figures the population in Burnley in the early fifties was around 85k so not massively more. Only saying because there seemed to be a lot of empty seats against saints last weekend

There was a huge post war boost in attendances that lifted even further for the cup. You are right about the Southampton game. Not sure how many were actually in the ground. Back in the 50s the attendance was also the number through the turnstiles.

people shouldn't get confused by huge crowd numbers, this was a cultural thing back then, totally different times. huge crowds turned out for virtually anything back then, it wasn't some massive love in for Burnley Fc.

Back in those days, hardly anyone had season tickets and most people were walk-ons, so no difference in price for the average punter whether it was league or cup. Nowadays, league games are effectively free on the day (ie. prepaid, long ago) and cup games cost a fortune. Hence it's a lot easier to decide not to go, and easier still to make the effort for a league game rather than a cup game.

bit before my time so thanks for the explanation as to the attendance boost etc

Those days, that’s what most people looked forward to for relaxation. Not a lot of people had a TV and this was long before MOTD, never mind Sky. If you didn’t go to the game, you didn’t get the chance to see the goals anywhere. To get any idea of how the goal looked, you relied on a photograph of the goal and match report of it in the local newspapers.
Re the Southampton match gate, the heavy rain had changed the minds of quite a few people from attending. Plus they know they would see the game on stream, or catch highlights later the same day.

Much more expensive in absolute and real terms than in those days
But walk ons were not the norm in big cup games which were all ticket with one ticket per person in the queue. I have gone down with my Dad on a Sunday morning with a queue that went from the Turf along Queens Park Road past the cricket field all the way up to Queens Park and up the road to the top of Brunshaw road for the Arsenal cup game which we lost 2-0 in 1953. By the time you got a ticket you were either soaking wet or frozen to death! On that day it was freezing.

It was Bobby Mitchell with the tame penalty miss for Newcastle at Turf Moor in this clip, but he must have spent some time between this match and the replay practising, as he was the same player who scored a late penalty to win the replay 1-0.
Gifton Noel-Williams's penalty miss against Coventry City (2005) certainly wasn't tame, but that's one of the more memorable misses I can think of, although sadly, that never made it onto the end of season highlights video.

Yes that's the one I was thinking of BC..... Got to be the worst ever......He feigned injury beautifully though.

Worst I remember in my time watching (since 1990) was Gifton's.
The one on the original link and the one in the cup in the 80s were at least on target.

my old m8 David (god rest his soul) always laughed about this, as it was on a VHS we got him for Christmas donkeys years ago "Nick Hancocks Football Howlers"
Devine was his "Claret to pick on" during his time at BFC
We always pulled Davids leg about him always moaning about one particular player.
John Deary used to come in for a lot of stick ... If memory serves JD scored a screamer at Hull and it took David almost until we got to Skipton on the way home to grudgingly admit JD was man of the match that day
Sadly David passed away in 2016 .... age 84
As soon as I saw this thread it immediately made me think about David and the Devine pen for LCFC even though the thread was about Turf Moor.....
Cheers to the OP for making me remember my m8
