I am considering buying a decent watch as a method of savings/investment as well as the fact that I fancy owning a nice watch.

I would be looking at spending between £3k and £5k.

I’m hoping that somebody on here may have some knowledge around watches and able to share advice/recommendations

Not too knowledgable on them investment wise. I have a friend that bought a Omega Seamaster for about £4.5k. Now from what he has said to me they dont lose much value but each year he sends it off to a place in Manchester to get an M.O.T for it if you will. Think they take it apart, clean it, do the windings and whatever else. Then they reseal it and send it back. This costs about £175 each year.

What I am trying to get at is I think any watch around this price range will probably need the same care and attention. So investment wise if you are looking at 10 years you have spent your 4.5k plus another 1.75k on making sure it stays to its high standard. Somehow I doubt any watch would increase in value much more than the investment required initially and over a prolonged time period to make it worth it.

Now if its just to wear a nice watch as rewards for your hard work go ahead. But at that price range unless you have an intimate knowledge of certain watches it would be hard to make money on it

I know nowt about watches ... but I definitely wouldn't consider one as an investment...... but as something to enjoy wearing yes.

Investment may have been the wrong word. I’m hoping to put some money into a watch where I can hopefully pull similar money back out on a rainy day if I ever need to

Cashed in to buy one twix every home game tho as rumour has it...

I have a contact in retail who has a workshop in manchester. Bought the wife a bespoke ring. He has a workshop making for the trade. He told me that i could by a rolex and bring it back and if i had looked after it id get my money back.

He said omegas, tags etc lose money.

I have neither, just saying!

Well, we all know £4k is the perfect amount to be spending!

Not sure buying one as an investment is particularly wise as unlikely to go up in value. So better buying one you like first and foremost

Definitely look for an automatic though. More likely to retain its value or lose less. And definitely get it looked after.

Some brands retain value better than others. Even when spending four or five figures!

Matter of taste but love the tag heuer Monaco watches. In that price range if you a Rolex have a look at the air king.

If you're after investment, then the only answer is Rolex basically. Have a look at the TZ-UK forum, plenty of good advice there.

For those saying don't buy as an investment, buying the right watch at the right time can be very lucrative.

Failing that sell the house and get yourself a Patek...

Oh and make sure you negotiate. You can get a great discount if you do. Especially if it’s an area where there are a few shops even in places like Trafford centre. And especially at certain times of the year or if you pay cash / outright.

Had a fair number of `luxury` watches in my time and lost money on every single one. If you want a nice watch just buy the one you like and haggle as much as you can on price ( big profit margins). Then enjoy wearing it. Do NOT buy as an investment.

Key is don't buy new. You won't get a discount on Rolex, and Patek aside, everything else is going to lose more than any discount you'll negotiate. I am heavily up on mine after 2-3 years ownership. Will the bubble burst? Maybe but I bought them to enjoy. Seriously sign up to TZ if you're serious.

Talking watches. My neighbour has had a break. Took his old Tissot in for repair. They told him it’s obsolete, to me a watch is a watch, but after sending it away to Switzerland to confirm it is genuine he can have a £580 watch for £180. He’s snapped up that deal.

Funnily enough I looked at some "pre owned" watches today at a jewellers in Yarm, mostly Rolex. One thing I did notice was that they all come with a certificate of authenticity and the original box which I'm told gives them more value than without them.

I’ve been privileged enough to buy a number of luxury watches over the last 25 years, gradually upgrading. They CAN definitely be an investment, and I would agree that Rolex are the best to make a profit on. I was on a 5 year waiting list for a Daytona, costing @3.5k. Traded it last year to buy a second Panerai, and I got nearly triple what I paid for it, and still believe I could have got more. if buying used, ensure you get the box and papers, and if possible original receipt.

Many high end jewellers / watch shops now stock used watches - but I’d highly recommend Watchfinder.

Mind you, it's studded with 1,598 diamonds. And you probably get a nice box.

I bought a digital/waterproof watch from Decathlon Sports for about £10 which three years later I swapped for 5 litres of very drinkable rum in Cuba, that felt like a good return to me; I had to decant the rum into my own bottles mind as he wouldn't include the plastic jerry-jug in the deal - that was far too valuable/irreplaceable.

The real answer, for that price bracket, is a second hand Rolex. Preferably something that had a fairly short production run but isn't currently that trendy. Ultimately though there's no guarantees so buy something you'd wear.

The idea that high end watches are a serious investment is an idea mainly promoted by the makers of high end watches.

There's that many good quality fakes around that you'll struggle to impress high end minge with one anyway.

I would certainly look at buying second hand and something that is considered a 'classic'. i.e Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day/Date, Omega Speedmaster etc etc.

Some sound advice on here already but one thing I will have to disagree with strongly is sending it off for a service anywhere other than back to the manufacturer. You only really need to get a watch serviced every 2-3 years and having it done by the manufacturer and recorded in a service/logbook significantly increases resale value.

Essentially - buy second hand with a manufacturers service history and continue to send back to manufacturer every 2-3 years.

Use the £4K-£6k to have a family holiday in Turkey - whilst there pick up a grade AAA replica from one of the many outlets for about £50 to £100. I got an Omega Seamaster out there about 5 years ago - its still going strong and looks and feels genuine.

My next purchase will be a Panerai Luminor.

I have an Omega Seamaster. I treated myself when I left the RAF. I also wanted something nice to hand down to my son when I croak. For resale I was advised by the salesman to buy Rolex. I guess it depends on your reasons for buying.

Many moons ago Bought two Beautiful Blue Cartier watches his n hers. Got them cos I liked the slim face and gold numerals on Blue background.always slightly regret putting em away somewhere when the batteries died... They were Fake. Never liked Rolex fake or real tbh.

I decided to treat myself when I retired and bought a Breitling Avenger ll Seawolf, currently circa £3,000.

If it increases in value then great, if not I will have enjoyed it, which was the main aim.

There are a few brands that will appreciate but they tend to cost more than your budget. You could try a British brand like Farer, they may grow over time. Mainly just buy a watch that appeals and enjoy it

I thought that I was leaning towards a Breitling but research suggest an Omega may be a better investment
