Is it just me or is this overused and now getting boring.

Was reading an article on how this actually gives them an advantage. Because whilst they are doing it the opposition are relaxing and their bodies are cooling down as they are expected to stay still for it. Yet the All blacks are getting psyched up and by the end of it their bodies are more prepared for the first ten mins of the match than the opposition who are playing catch up getting their adrenaline going again.

Also why do the football team not perform the Haka if it is so important to their culture or is their a reason I am too stupid to realise

The Haka is the best part of the game.. The rest of the game is crap..

Amazing timing, Gary Lineker tweeted the same earlier today.

Shouldn't be allowed- unless our lads can do a Morris Dance in response.
Irish can do one of those tap-dancey things, Scots can do a sword/claymore dance and the Welsh can chuck some leeks & daffs about. French can do some sort of shruggy shoulders gesture dance. Australians can do some Kangaroo dancing.

The Haka is just a bit of primeval grunting and face pulling...sort of thing we did at Primary School...but it's the sort of garbage the TV companies love.

I agree with all the criticism of the sport though - nowhere near enough rolling around pretending to be hurt and falling down at the slightest touch. Also largely lacks silly dances when people score a try. I dare say the players dont even all wear Beatz headphones- pathetic really, don't know why I've been watching the World Cup most mornings.

Played hooker and occasionally open side for years Leadbelly.....and loved every minute...?games changed now though...the breathtaking skills of the Phil Bennet's..Campese's...and Barry John's are a thing of the past.....it was all about skill and there was a position for everyone..whatever their shape

The Haka is so ingrained in rugby , now never seen it done live but still gives me goose bumps every time I see it on the box .

It’s nothing more than a hilarious homoerotic dance with huge muscular hideously ugly guys stomping and grunting Good for them and their culture but it strikes about as much fear into the opposition as the CFS or Ken Clarke That said, as the undisputed daddies of RU they can do what they want .

I don't like rugby, very rarely watch it but the NZ haka when done well is a beautiful thing to watch and long may it continue.

It’s intended to strike fear into the opposition and is almost certain to give them a slight edge going into a match. So I’ve no idea why at the elite level, when fine margins come into play, the opposition subject themselves to it. Odd.

Some pig ignorant responses to what is a ritual steeped in the kiwis heritage and Maori folklore. Personally love seeing the haka and admire their passion and pride on full display in representing their nation.

I'd be more than happy for Burnley to do the Haka before every match if it made us as successful as the All Blacks.

And if they're not obliged, then why do they do it?

I appreciate it's a different sport and culture. But I couldn't imagine a Sean Dyche team standing there before the game as Man City danced around the centre circle for 3 minutes prior to kick off...

There’s generally more respect in international competition. We even (mostly) manage to respect national anthems in football.
Having lived in NZ 7years (I’m a citizen now) I’m not keen on rugby - it’s generally the first and last thing in the news every day, but the Haka is culturally important here and it seems a harmless tradition to get worked up about. Probably adds to the spectacle.

Just the opposite, I think SD would insist they stood there as a mark of respect. The Haka is massively important to the maori people and 100's of years old.

If you read this article about Britain showing regret for some of Captains Cooks crew killing several maoris because they saw the Haka as being aggressive when they were greeted with it.

I suppose I sort of respect what it is, but have to agree with the opening poster that it's sort of tedious. It was one thing having it appear on lions tours every eight years, but with them turning up for autumn internationals every year, our summer tours, World cups etc it's turned into something I do something else during, like the national anthems.

Still, it's very much less tedious than people that learn the words and actions and perform it over here in pubs etc.
