Alli and Lingard dropped from the squad.

Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham have been selected. If Abraham plays in the next two games, he won't be able to represent Nigeria.

England squad:

Goalkeepers: Tom Heaton (Aston Villa), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley)

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ben Chilwell (Leicester), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Michael Keane (Everton), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Danny Rose (Tottenham), Fikayo Tomori (Chelsea), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Chelsea), Fabian Delph (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), James Maddison (Leicester), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Declan Rice (West Ham), Harry Winks (Tottenham)

Forwards: Tammy Abraham (Chelsea), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Callum Wilson (Bournemouth)

From Sky ....

"Eyebrows were raised when Burnley sanctioned Heaton's move to Aston Villa after six years at the club - but Nick Pope has been waiting in the wings and seized his opportunity - surpassing Heaton in the stats in this term.

In fact, the stats suggest Pope is England's top goalkeeper and Heaton would fail to make the squad, with Bournemouth's Aaron Ramsdale in reserve ahead of Dean Henderson - after the latter's costly error against Liverpool."

"Burnley defender James Tarkowski edges his counterparts across a raft of metrics, including 56 duels won this term. Compared with other Premier League centre-backs, only Wolves' Willy Boly has won more.

Chelsea's Fikayo Tomori was born in Canada but has represented England at youth levels and would earn an inaugural senior call-up - boosted by his wonder goal in the 5-2 win at Wolves last month.

Brighton's Dan Burn would also make the squad, having never represented the Three Lions at any level, joining England regular Harry Maguire on the bench."

Mings gets picked and Tarks nowhere near the England team .... baffling!!

I guess he's not featured enough this season yet, although was reading an article which suggests Pep wants him as a full-time replacement for David Silva next season, so he'll need more games soon.

Joe Gomez has only played last night and they conceded 3. However good he might be that doesn’t merit a call up.

It is a great shame that the England manager chooses to pick young players, wet behind the ears, in preference to players who have learnt their trade and earned their place.

That was just what I was thinking that our midfielders aren't anything special

And call be biased but I would have Tarkowski in there instead of Ming's especially or Keane

If Tarkowski were to be transferred to Man U, Liverpool, Tottenham or Chelsea, I guarantee he would be in the next England squad.

I think Southgate previously said that Mings was in partly because we have a limited number of left sided centre backs. (Obviously some on here will clamour for Mee but I think that ship has sailed.)

People to to start realising how Southgate wants to play football and how he works.

He knows all about Tarks having had him in squads before. It’s not just about current form but building a much bigger squad of players than the number he can call up. Mings has been in 1 squad for about a week/10 days. He’ll want to see more of him. When the time comes to pick the Euro squad he then will have around 10 CH who have been in an England camp several times. He’ll then be able to call upon players who have had that experience and won’t be calling upon a newcomer to step in.

Lets hope he gives Maddison a go.

He's far better than what we have in Henderson, Dier, Winks etc..

This is for sure. Tbh as much as one or two have had caps whilst with us this remains a problem for us to keep our best assets that want to play for England...the players also know this which is some of the reason why it is likely Tarky will be moving at some point sooner or later...the other reason being 100k per week

Depends what you are asking him to do.

If he was to play in a holding midfield role then give me any of the other three any day of the week. If he is playing more advanced then yes he is streets ahead of those mentioned.

Henderson would be first midfielder on the teamsheet if anchoring the midfield ahead of him.

There or CH, yes, but the point still remains the same as Rice wasn't part of the original quote and it was just a straight comparison between those mentioned. As it is I'd have Henderson ahead of Rice anyway.

But non of these sides have shown any interest in Tarks suggesting they dont rate him highly enough to play for them.

There's a reason why a lot of the England players are chosen from the top 6 or 8 sides and thats because the top 6 - 8 sides tend to buy and own the best players* (see Maguire)

Trippier admitted himself he was poor last season. But you'd have thought an arm around the shoulder and a good rest over the summer would have done the trick. Maybe he fell out with Poch, or there were off field issues and he wanted a fresh start, who knows?

Getting an international side to a World Cup semi final.

Southgate gave Tarks a chance, perhaps he just hasn't got what GS is looking for. He's a brilliant defender in Burnley's system which is nothing like how GS wants England to play.
Having said that I really don't get Mings at all.

Getting a pretty pizz poor international side to a world cup semi final.

That's the achievement. Most on here could manage the USA women's team to a semi final, say. What he did was far tougher.

England had a very favourable draw in the WC. Even then, they failed to beat Luca Modric.

Nonetheless, some performances have looked refreshingly more mobile and fluid, than under previous managers.

Just not sure he really has real players of quality in midfield and his back line is not settled. Not to mention his keeper choice.

Maddison withdrawn from the squad with illness,i'll wager he's fit next Saturday,so that's Delph,Heaton and Maddison pulled out now,i wonder if that trio will all play in their next PL games,i strongly suspect they will, and yes Burnley are just as culpable,McNeil called off from the u21's recently and yet he played in our next match a matter of days later.

What tends to happen when people are injured or ill is that they eventually recover. Sometimes they die, but usually they recover.

Hopefully Maddison recovers a few weeks down the line,he'll be hard to keep quiet on his recent run of form.

I'm late catching up on this (too much rugby) but the pick that startles me is Fikayo Tomori. He's had a fair few games in the Championship whilst on loan at Hull and Derby over the last two seasons but, prior to the last 5 matches for Chelsea, only previously had 31 minutes in the Prem (in 2015/16). He's a CB as far as I've seen- so seen as ahead of Tarky on form??
I understand he's eligible to play for several countries and maybe there's an element of "tying him down" for the future but England team should be picked on recent form/quality surely.

I guess arguably he is being picked on form, he's played well in the past 5 games and got a call up. I can't say I've watched him enough to know how good he is. He was Derby's player of the season last year so must be pretty decent and has featured in all of the England youth teams which does appear to help with getting a chance in the full team.

Aye had to laugh at one of the player (think it was TAA) saying how the squad being picked purely on form now is keeping everyone on their toes. If that is the case then how is Tarks not in the squad or possibly even Ben Mee. Why was Barnes not in the last squad (other than being a fake Austrian) and how is Pope not number 1. There are probably also lots of other very good cases for players from other teams too.
